It's Layton in the 2nd series of games (4~6) so the writing and big twists aren't even semi-plausable and are just complete and utter bullshit.
The music is phenominal, the voice acting is pretty good, the "main villian" is a joke, the big twists are so bad that they needed DLC to explain plot holes, and the game is 4/5ths layton 1/5th Wright since he solves most cases and carries the plot.

I really don't understand why people hate Athena. I mean I could get not caring for her that much, but the amount of vitriol is surprising. Is it because she's female? Any new female character is automatically a "mary sue"?
I thought her character was fine. Really no worse than Maya/Ema/Trucy/Kay. She served her role decently. If she was a one-off character I wouldn't care, but I'm not opposed to her returning either. It all depends on the execution.

I honestly didn't care for any of them but MAYBE Ema. Maya is boring as hell with a really plain design, Trucy/Kay were annoying and Athena was unmemorable for most of the part.

That was the only problem with the game. The handholding and lack of penalties. I don't know why they did that. Athena's mood matrix was awesome, but after I found out there was no penality, all the pressure went away. So stupid. I had trouble figuring out a couple of them aswell, but you can just hit anything till it works because no penalty.
