I'd argue WoW private servers are the best thing out there right now, if it happens to be one with a sizable community.
That's in part because you don't have to pay anything for it. There really are no MMOs worth paying a monthly subscription for, save for maybe EVE. But you'd probably already be playing that right now if it was your thing.
As for good free to play games, that'd be quite the needle in the haystack.

The questing experience is fucking fantastic, especially in Spires of Arak.
FFXIV is a fine game, provided you're not already at endgame.
Legion has some promise, it looks like Blizzard's last ditch effort to save the game by just giving people everything they ever asked for. Will either be great or be the final nail in the game's coffin.
Tree of Savior was a disappointment. It just feels so sloppily made and boring.
B&S still has yet to come to the states, but my hopes aren't high for it.

I just got my 3rd level 100 alt last night I believe.
Trying to up my chances at getting the burning drake from Dragon Soul.
It is the last one I need in order to get the green drake.
That is currently my ultimate goal but WoW is by the by just something to occupy my idle hands while I listen to podcasts.

I've tried so many other MMO hoping that a better alternative exists but time and time again realizing that WoW is the worst form of MMO, except for all the others.

I hate this kind of carrot on a stick shit. I know it's basically a staple of the MMO genre but you're always committing yourself to an aspect of the game you don't enjoy in the hope that you'll eventually get something cool.
The last time I was really enjoying an MMO was while I was leveling on Nostalruis. I was grouped with my friend and guild mate. We were alliance players forming a group for Razorfen Kraul. Shit instance with shit drops. We were there for a shot at one or two items and a couple quests.
But the real fun we had wasn't even the instance. It's fucking Vanilla WoW and you don't teleport into your dungeon when you form a group. You have to get on a boat and sail to Kalimdor, then walk to RFK. If you have particularly slow people in your group you might be waiting at the entrance for a while. Is waiting in front of an instance with your friend fun?
Actually, yes. RFK happens to be at the border between the Barrens and 1K needles. That's a border between contested territory and horde territory. Horde players walking into 1K needles usually aren't on their guard walking into contested territory for the first time. So we started ambusing horde players at the elevator while we waited for our group.
When the rest of our group got there, we kept doing it. Because it was world pvp, and it was fun. We were a group of five alliance lowbies attacking level ?? horde players walking by, and occasionally winning.
None of that would have happened if we teleported into the dungeon from the start.

The biggest problem I had with XIV was the boring questing. There's no surprises or interesting objectives, if there's an enemy to fight there's a purple miasma to enter. Nobody you talk to is going to turn hostile and none of the objectives are going to have a slight difference to them.
Also fuck the quests that force me to teleport between cities just to talk to someone. I do not understand the point of that. Quests in WoW are typically kept in one area of the world unless it's sending me to another area to quest.

WoW - same old shit. this last expac sucked dick cause lack of dungeons, bad pvp in ashran, and 2 1/2 raid tiers. i don't expect it to get better and i've lost hope
FFXIV - actually gets raid updates but pvp is a joke. grinding to 60 is gay as fuck, and the grind end game is gay as fuck. Hunts were stupid, the new relic grind is even dumber (800 runs of alex). it's fun and has stuff and the combat is like WoW's but kind of worse
Blade n Soul - not bad but mostly pvp based. art style is kinda weird (lol korean mmos) and questing is meh
Black Desert - honestly the only hope i have left in MMOs. cool stuff on the side, cool character creator, combat is like BnS but maybe a bit worse for PvP.
also note BnS is f2p iirc and BDO is going to be b2p so if i have to rank:

the side stuff is kind of cool. the housing stuff is jokey and has no reason to do it except for fun. people actually hang out in the housing districts which is cool so i can talk to my neighbors of my guildhouse. i like gold saucer a lot because it's something to do, and the dungeons in FFXIV are not absolutely awful (but they are easy peasy). This last expac they did not add many dungeons in comparison to how I felt about ARR but i think they added a lot over the course of ARR so that's why there are so many.
The raiding in FFXIV is not bad and can be hard but a lot of the "hard" boss fights are because of tight dps checks that require farming the first few steps/turns of the raid to get past.
The PvP could be good and i honestly do not hate it, but Wolves Den is practically dead as fuck which stinks
My only real complaints about the game are:
Dungeoning is stupid because if you meet people from out of your realm you cannot add them to something like say Battlenet to queue up again. The crossrealm stuff from WoW is a godsend for meeting people and having a good time
You cannot fucking tell/whisper while doing a dungeon run. They did this to prevent bullying of people in dungeons (i'm not joking.)

It's really obvious they had lightning in a bottle with RO and have no idea how to recreate it, or even what practices they used to make RO good in the first place.
The game is one long corridor after another filled with kill and gather quests, with the occasional big boss mob that is barely a threat but has a gajillion HP. You're constantly fighting with the players near you for kills and the enemy designs are bland and uninteresting.
There's so much to the game that feels unfinished or placeholder, but apparently most of this stuff is final and will make it to release. It's just a big disappointment.

I stopped playing the beta when I saw how painfuly linear the question experience was. I was playing a Peltasta so I wasn't too surprised that my enemies were damage sponges. That said, I got the impression that if I were to reroll, the question experience would be exactly the same. When the game is set up like that there really is no exploration element.

Cute 2D grafix, some lore, PQ/Bossing. Just has its own charm, there's a shit ton of classes and leveling is pretty easy now.
I'm tempted by ESO because it's the only other game except WoW that actually has decent lore.

Warcraft lore is actually my favorite video game lore of all time. I will admit that WoW hasn't really added many good things to it, but even if they are dragging it through the mud I'll still eat it up.

The problem is that there's nothing decent to top it. At least, nothing popular.I personally like Dragon's Dogma Online but that shit is grindy and fuck and JP onry, plus it has some infuriating mechanics.
Plus, DD:DA is coming to PC soon, so it's going to be even more irrelevant once that shit hits.
