Anything else just felt...wrong. Aerith will die soon, and why have a designated healer around in a game with the Materia system? Red XIII was really just some schmuck they picked up at Shinra Corp, though at least the elder guy at his place was pretty plot important from what I recall. (I've beaten the game two or three times, but certain plot details are murky to me) Cait Sith looks stupid and was a spy, so fuck him. Cid was funny, but didn't play much of a role in the plot. Yuffie was a materia thieving bitch. Vincent's an emo bitch, essentially what people think Cloud was.
Meanwhile, Cloud fucks Tifa under the Highwind, is arguably the canon love interest, and was his childhood friend, so it makes sense to keep her around. Barret grows to trust Cloud and be his good friend over the course of the game. It makes the most sense to me to keep them around. Barret's ranged attack capabilities don't hurt either.

It's my first time playing the game so idk if I should be so strict with the roles I've assigned but it's been working out, and it's pretty fun.
I really liked Cait Sith cuz I'm a cat person but then heused Marlene as a hostage.so I swapped him for Red.
Had fun with Cid for a while. Just threw the fury ring on him and made monsters drink their goddamn tea.
It felt so right. Swapped him out so I could have more control.
Played with Tifa and Yuffie a bit in physical roles. Aeris was just so basic I never went near her.
As for Barret, I honestly can't understand why people use him. He literally looks like a chimp. Now remake Barret I can get down with.
All in all having a ton of fun with this game. It holds up very well, don't even mind the graphics.
Cloud/Barrett/Tifa as my fellow anons with taste said. Also give Barrett Cover and Counter materia.
