I never understood this argument. I don't play many Kirby games myself but if you've seen some of the game footage with him in action you can tell he's not generic, even if his differences aren't that significant.
He's obviously not a regular Waddle Dee and they've made that clear from what I can tell, IIRC there aren't regular Waddle Dees in Rainbow Curse (the game where he's the multiplayer)
