Just use the units you like and look up how to unlock other classes. If you start to have trouble in some of the later maps then simply leveling up a weapon in the Item world can make a big difference.

There's nothing irreversible you need to worry about. I had very little idea on what to do for like forty hours and still turned out fine.
Remember to have fun, you can always min-max later.

The only real suggestion i can come up with is to make a Mage as they can kill from afar and do a very good job at doing so.

Also you can't fuck up with disgaea 5 every thing is str8 forward all the classes are from the quest board.

Axel was my favorite character until they made him a 100% unlikable fuckwad in Disgaea 4. I'm still salty about that.
