Feels bad. What went wrong? I'd say it's the lackluster gunplay/death animations of GTA 5 desu. If you're going to make me kill folks 70% of the game.. It better be god damned enjoyable to do so.
Remember how realistic the RDR gunplay was? You'd shoot a guy in the gut.. And sometime he'd grab his stomach in pain and try to make an escape.. Sometimes he'd die on impact. It was dynamic and exciting. Tis not the case in GTA 5. You've seen one death, you've seen them all. That's inexcusable in a post RDR world.

Mainly with the arc with the doctor and the natives. I felt that though it did good world building, otherwise it was pretty unnecessary.
I dunno, I think the game lost steam around there. Mexico had 2 separate grand finales where you catch members of your old group.
But then you go back to the US and just sorta dick around for a while trying to find Dutch. And then you have the single longest conversation while riding out for the last fight.
The last showdown with Dutch was good and everything after that was great, but I felt that Dutch's arc was easily the weakest.

Here's my two cents.
John's story was handled pretty well and while yes it was dragged on, because of how massive the states were but mostly because they handled it like a typical spaghetti western right down to the monologuing and the cheesy and hocky sfx. It was great.
That is until you get to the farm. None of the shit John does at this point is considered action oriented or adventurous like a western anymore. It's doing boring chores, arguing with your wife, yelling at your lazy half-ancestor, teaching your son NOT to be like you in the sence of how you were in the past. That never fucking happens anywhere, usually thats a sign of your game ending and the final cutscene but no you're doing all of these mundane tasks when here you are wishing you could shoot some more baddies up. But again, from the point of view of the campaign, John wants to leave all of that behind and you can really see it when you start doing boring chores. It feels like he really wants to fucking settle and teach his kid about being a rancher. Its almost as if the player itself is John's love for adventure, edging itself into John trying to get those good moments back. I know that sounds incredibly stupid but its done really well when Jack starts getting shooting lessons.
Jack wants to know about his dads adventures and he keeps talking about how cool it'd be to be an outlaw to the point of going out and nabbing his own bear. Then they killed John. Not because they caught him by surprise, but after he put up one last hopeless gunfight. He KNEW he was gonna lose but he did it anyway. To close the vicious circle.
All in all, It feels like real character development when the core game changes to some degree. You're doing something right.
I mean in something like Mass Effect or some shit, the whole game still feels the same even though the characters are supposed to be changing. You fell absolutely nothing.
