Realistically it's actually due to brand popularity. It's not just Playstations, it's also Bravias, Xperias and the likes.
PS platforms sell well due to iconic franchises related to them, like Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo and such.
Even though FF is now a multiplat series, nearly 80% of it's sales (worldwide) are still coming from Sony platforms.
Also FIFA and the likes.
Nintendo is treated a a company that makes products for children (which is actually true) and many large electronic shops don't even carry their stuff at all, or have a very small section in some back corner.
Nintendo doesn't seem to give a shit either, there are almost no ads anywhere.
Xboxes are treated as the poor-man consoles that someone would only get for modding.
Which is funny, as the best racing series (Forza) is still exclusive to Xbox platform.

Back in the day when Nintendo ruled, Europe didn't really give a fuck about consoles since they were so fucking overpriced, so we used computers instead. Then when the PS1 came out it was decently priced and had cheap as fuck games so everyone jumped on that. Then PS2 was obviously the go to console for almost everyone that generation, then the 360 did fairly well I think. But ultimately the PS3 won since brand recognition.
Then with the PS4 it's really the only console anyone also wants this generation, similar to the PS2.
As long as it has Fifa, Playstation will sell in Europe.

Generally Nintendo liked to jack-up prices and sign contracts with shops that made it impossible to sell other consoles, since our anti-monopoly/fair competition/whatever legislation worked and works far better than it did in the US, SEGA consoles were quite popular. Nintendo consoles were overpriced and had more expensive games as well so you can see where is it going.

Can't say for whole Europe, but I'm from Poland and sony is the only one who really tried to sell their console. Nintendo doesn't exists, there is some third party distributor and prices are way too high. It's better with microsoft, but their focus in Poland is on software, not xbox. We got xbone pretty late and have to wait to around 2010 to choose Poland in xbox live registration.

Pretty much this. Back when Nintendo was the dominant console maker, its presence here was negligible because servicing a market with more than one language was too hard, apparently. Later it doubled down on the whole "cute, family friendly nostalgia" business, which effectively killed its appeal for good because there's no Nintendo nostalgia here to speak of. Xbox is the Murricabox, useless for anyone who isn't a diehard Halofag.
That leaves Playstation and PC as the only viable platforms for most people.

Again. I did go overboard when I said "didn't really give a fuck about consoles". But the focus on computer gaming over console gaming did leave a pretty huge mark on the early console sales over here, and a big reason why Sony has gotten such a big foothold. The Master System was pretty much the only console that sold better in Europe before the PS1.

For a while there SCEE was the only company not screwing us super hard. Here in Australia (we get bundled in with Europe for vidya) we were an outlier Microsoft territory for most of the PS360 generation but even that's dropped away.

The Master System sold around 7 million in the EU. 10–13 worldwide. The SNES sold 50 million worldwide. And only 8.58 million of that is classed under "Other".

I feel that in the olden days of America your parents or casual would say "he's play Nintendo" even if you wasn't. In the UK it felt to me that the saying was "he's playing Playstation". It just felt that culturally the country thought video games was Playstation. Pic related.
In the UK personally the consoles that felt like the "standard" culturally for each generation were the Megadrive / Genesis, Playstation 1, Playstation 2, and now Playstation 4. The last generation was the Xbox 360 until very late on when it felt like it was both / very close on numbers.
I honestly do not know anyone who owns an Xbone right now. The domination of PS4 right now might be the strongest I've ever seen in a generation. I actually knew people with both Xbox and Gamecubes, even fucking Dreamcasts. Even Sega fucking Saturns.
From my understanding, sega ended support for the master system and genesis when europe was still supporting them, so they told sega to fuck off and switched to sony
