I might have agreed LBW was a better game if in the final battle when you went into the wall to fight Ganon it was in Zelda 2 style combat. Though that probably would have required a bit more setup.

Look at it from an objective standpoint. If you were going to recommend one of the two to someone who has never played either, which would you pick? Neither is bad, but one is enhanced.
Personally, I'd tell them to play both in order, since the transition from "Nice game!" to "Whoa, this new mechanic is nuts! Hey, this boss isn't the same!" is neat.

"Although the two are built on the same game engine, Oracle of Ages concentrates on puzzles, while Oracle of Seasons focuses on action."
Seasons has 4 slightly altered states. Ages has 2 entirely separate overworlds.
Seasons rarely has seasons actually affect dungeon puzzles. Ages has time period actually affect 3 different dungeons entirely, and alters a 4th.
Season's dungeon rooms mostly focus on "beat this guy or that guy". Ages' dungeon rooms mostly focus on "solve for X".
I sure as fuck didn't play Link's Awakening for the action. I wasn't going to play it's successor for the action either. Ages is better, suck it.

Currently doing a replay of that on the GameCube, at the tri force shards stage right now.
WW does a lot right but gets a long wrong, I think. It's definitely the most picaresque and charming Zelda, but it can be very boring going through the motions of sailing everywhere / stopping to play Wind's Requiem whenever you need to go in a new direction.

Also Wiiu Wind Waker improved sailing a bit, there's this item that continously puts the wind at your back and speeds up the boat. Keeps you from having to change wind direction manually

That was the whole fucking point. Ages focused more on puzzles whereas Seasons focused more on action. If you liked one over the other you could choose which you wanted.

Order I played any zelda games:

I was thinking of playing them in the order of the timeline, then heading down each of the timeline splits.
But I don't have a way to play the 3DS games, and I'll need to softmod my Wii or borrow WindWaker to play it.

You have that games that were favored by people who actually the games, understand there faults, and still consider them fine games none the less. A true Pat should be able to see clearly things like Seasons is just as good as Ages and it was intended that both be played as a set not preferring one over the over the other. They could tell that Majora's Mask should be appreciated for all trying such interesting concepts like the transformation gimmicks and world reset mechanic and putting so much work into it even though it was an expansion technically, the only on the Pat side that's questionable is 2 but that falls under the appreciating the falls bit I suppose.
On the Pleb side
You have games that are only known for the reputation and reputation alone. These are games that get played simply because they mostly are recommended by people who jump on the bandwagons of reviewers and mainstream opinions or
Marketed and shilled to be considered better games. Who else but plebs and newcomers could be fine with ABTW being a near 100% knock off of ATTP, insist that 1 Oracles game is better and the other is ignorable, and assume games like OoT and the original are flawless masterpieces that can't be topped

There's no point in trying to play chronologically. They literally make this shit up as they go along, and piece it together after. Split timelines and paradoxes, and contradictions.
Just play in release order. You can get pretty much all of them on emulators except A Link Between Worlds and Triforce Heroes [which shouldn't be played at all for story, I think it was fun though].
