The problem is that you also need the DLC to get any amount of decent content but nobody plays the DLC because it's a dead game nobody wants to invest money in.
It's also extremely repetitive and doesn't come with enough freedom to have interesting moments emerge.
I honestly recommend the latest CoD over it if you want to shoot at dudes and have fun. Rainbow Six Siege is also a better alternative but it comes with the downside of little content and the need for team-coordination and teamwork.

Halo dropped local multiplayer and essentially locked all multiplayer content behind the gold paywall, so MS/343 can go fuck themselves.

If Titanfall had simply included what the first three Halo games had in terms of game modes and features and some deeper customization, it would have many, many times as many players as that, at any given time.
It's a shallow, stripped-down shell of what it could have been so it has little/no longevity. Most recent shooters have been similar anemic affairs, and its why they're underselling and not developing dedicated, long-lasting communities like games in the recent past have.
