So I've been playing this game for a little while (I'm 5 hours in,) and it's clear at this point that /v/ was wrong about this game.
FFXIII is a wild adventure set within a chaotic and beautiful world. The map may be extremely linear, but the game is essentially the experience of facing one major crisis after another, and it could be accurately described as a true outlaw simulator. It is within this setting that you learn about the characters and their motivations.
Some say that "the game pretty much plays itself," and there's more than a little truth to that argument, but there's more to it than that. The combat system is unique in that it feels like you only control one character at a time, but in reality, the other party members are strongly influenced by the paradigms you select over the course of a battle. It's sort of like a streamlined version of some of the features you see in the Tales games. Rather than changing the behavior of characters individually, you perform a paradigm shift mid-battle, and the other characters begin taking action that is appropriate for their new role.
Overall, I'm enjoying the game so far. I can see that you might not like it if you're not big on story-driven games, but I think that anyone who plays RPGs for the story would be doing themselves a disservice if they never gave the game an honest shot to win them over.

I'm playing this through right now and I agree OP. Its a great game. The one thing I cannot endorse is the fucking fact that the first 20 hours is a tutorial. That shit is inexcusable. If this game had a "hard mode" or something where the full crystarum and all roles were unlocked from the start it would be a 9.5/10. As it stands, its maybe a 7/10 in my eyes. I absolutely love the battle system but it took way too long for them to take the training wheels off.

I actually really liked FF13 and didn't think I would.
I played the fuck out of it. Beat it twice and even got all 1000 achievements on the 360 version.
That may have been the weirdest thing I've done in any games. Still, had a great time with it. Guess the game isn't for everyone, but I really enjoyed it.
The crystarium being instant activation in 13-2 alone makes it leaps and bounds better than 13. Not to mention the instant paradigm switching.
I just beat 13 for the second time, and moved on to 13-2 and god damn I forgot how much better it is. Noel is the GOAT and Caius is pretty good too.

It took a long time. The hardest part was figuring out which items I did have and had collected so I wasn't wasting my time recollecting, buying shit.
I made like a spreadsheet and everything. It's weird because I'm not usually that much of an autist...just like in this one instance.
I think I sold a lot of stuff once I had created/upgraded it to help the process along.

FFXIII was the worst game that square has released in the last 7 years and probably one of the worst jrpg's ever weighted against budget and development time.
Final Fantasy 13 is Skyrim of video games. It offers zero freedom to do anything and it pretty much button masher through retarded story.
Skyrim is focused on offering complete freedom, but they fail at it because they are incompetent to do so and thus world feels shallow and you are not interested in doing anything. And story is retarded.
Sazh was great, but once you go to 13-2 from 13 you can't help seeing just how much better and vibrant the characters are in 13-2. Noel and Serah looked to be like a shitty duo before release but they really shined together.
Also the music in 13-2 is brilliant.
The only reason you would like FF13 is if you've never played an RPG or 3rd person action game in your life.

XIII is the only FF game i've ever played. Wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either. Lot of grinding to get to the appropriate level to take on some of the later bosses, story was convoluted but somehow kept you involved, visuals were nice but felt like I was drugged by an irresponsible dentist, characters were alright but looked like how I think twelve year olds view 'cool' adults, /ss/ implications were strangely well integrated into the story.

Yes, paradimgs have interesting depth to them. Too bad you're stuck spamming auto-battle for the first 20 hours before the game decides you're ready to play on your own.
The story bombards you with jargon and expects you to fully understand it (which goes against the basic rules of writing a good fiction) and makes little to no sense during your first playthrough anyway.
It gets good, but getting to the good parts is hardly worth the hassle.

Dragging the fans under the bus to appeal to people who couldn't give a shit otherwise is what made FF13 terrible, and now they're just doubling down on dumb.
Why is making their flagship game a traditional JRPG experience such a terrifying risk for SE? Did they forget what got them to where they are in the first place? FF15 is not looking to appeal to anybody in any reasonable way for the cost and marketing. Why not just take the risk and make it actually good in a predictable way that fans have come to expect?
