Characters are the main thing that 2 and 3 have over 1, more 3 than 2 but both are good.
The characters in 1 were archetypes. They had traits and lines and that was it, you had a ton but they were all as deep as a puddle. At least in 2 they had arcs and missions and character development for every side character, too bad most were stereotypes. Then 3 came along and made the characters interesting.
I challenge you to look at the side cast of VC1 and try to find a character as good as Alfons or Helmut.
