Not much of a modding community, and the total number of games is lower than other systems. Smash is pretty much your only option for fighting games, and to my knowledge, there really isn't a WRPG on the system. There are a few decent JRPGs available. There are several solid 2D and 3D platformers and you can get Bayonetta 1&2, along with Wonderful 101, which I personally think are three of the best action games ever. There isn't much for FPSs, but if you don't mind third person shooters and have a decent online connection Splatoon is really fun. There are a couple of ports from the PS3 and 360, but honestly, they probably aren't worth it if you've already played them. No new Zelda sucks, no new Metroid sucks, and the NX coming out in a year or two means the WiiU might not be the right choice if you're looking towards the future.
If you don't already have a WiiU, you should look through the catalog, see if you can find 10 games that sell you on the system, and decide from there. If not, you might just have to save up and wait for the NX and see what it brings to the table.

If you want to buy a console just to play a handful of nintendo games, go for it.

I'd honestly recommend at this point waiting for NX. If it has backwards compatibility with Wii U then skip it and wait for NX. If it doesn't wait for a price cut on Wii U then pick it up.
