It's not even in some alternate world like the Joker sub-series of Monsters is. It's still in the semi-medieval era of DQ1.

Well it is technically a 'what if' spin off a main game just like Dragon Quest Monsters was a spin off of Dragon Quest VI.
Also, Dragon Quest V had mine carts and flying castles. Don't think these are too out of the question for the series.
Also, I think it looks really unique and fun. About the only thing Minecraft about it is the building part. I just hope we fucking get the game in the west (as well as all DQ games).

What I'm trying to tell you is, spin offs don't have to conform to your expectations of a medieval setting. Especially when Akira Toriyama is involved. This is the guy who had space flight, cars, magic and dinosaurs in the same universe.
