Let's talk spookshit.

What have you been playing or replaying lately?

Man, I still remember how Resident Evil 2's scenario system blew my tiny mind as a kid. I wish some other game would do this, it was so awesome. Like having 4 games in one.

Should I replay it, /v/? Does it still hold up?

Condemned: Criminal Origins

The sequel is good shit until you get to >illuminati aliens out of fucking nowhere
But until then it's 100ccs of terror injected into your eyeballs.
the first game had an ending that takes place in a old farm house so intense it makes you want to vomit.

The investigation sequences amount to more arkham asylum "use the light on the thing" than professor leyton problem solving.

It does. Way more if you have a real CRT and console, emulated it looks like garbage because backgrounds are too low res.

If you absolutely have to go with PC, download the 2006 jap-only rerelease called Biohazard 2 Sourcenext. It has an english patch.

It has previously unreleased super high quality FMVs and Nightmare difficulty that was originally only on dreamcast and first PC release which doensnt work on modern machines.

Ehhh... I watched so many streams of that game and tried to play it myself but I just can't. It's not horror, it doesnt have exploration or item management... It's essentially a hobo beat'em up.
>>
>>320492521
I don't have a CRT and my original PS is busted, but thanks, anon, I might just try that re-release!
>>
>>320491518
>remember that goddamn Mall section
>instant paranoia whenever things made a sound
>still get the occasional shivers whenever you're stuck in the dark with a shitty pipe

Over time it loses the edge for atmosphere but I had some good spooks. Condemned 2 was interesting but I had too much fun fucking around with the new mechanics to be scared.
>>
>>320492596

>item management
>guns are super OP but you cant reload, carry six shots max, and missing can still cost you most your health
>weapons break and require repair, that bomb ass rebar and concrete just shit itself on you in the middle of a fight
>saying hobo beat em up like it's a bad thing

What the fuck did you want? A crafting system?

Small info - Jap versions have, like regular american and european ones two game modes - New game and Arrange game, each with their own multiple difficulty levels.

American versions of RE across all paltforms have regular "new game", and "arrange game" has just easy mode selection, which is japanese regular mode. Japanese RE games are made with way lower difficulty levels by default - less enemies, more ammo etc etc.

So, in Japanese versions, "new game" with its own 3 difficulty levels (easy, norm, hard) are all way easier than what the rest of the world played. For the actually standard difficulties you need to go under "arrange mode". You need to finish both scenarios once iirc to unlock "hard mode" there, or you can also just grab a save file off the internet.

I recommend that hard mode (aka nightmare mode) because it makes RE2 probably the most challenging game in the series. Zombies require a random number between 5 and 20 to die, you pick up less ammo, herbs heal less etc etc. It's a really neat addition for people who replay RE2 to death and find it too easy. Sorry if I described this poorly.

tl;dr Jap version difficulties are inverted, go into "arrange game" for non-babby mode.

It's too action for my tastes, I do recognize it for a pretty great game however. It's just too out there for me, if I want to go for an action game I may as well play a proper brawler or a full on shooter. This just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth somehow.
>>
>that save theme
Resident Evil series has a bunch of tracks and I think CV's save theme is my favorite
>>
>>320493687
bunch of good tracks*

it's a shame they never really bothered with making memorable soundtracks once the series went full action
>>
>>320493687
I agree, CV is my favorite. Closely followed by Zero save theme and RE1 save theme. (well, one of the two RE1 themes, dont know the name but its the one that ended up re-used in REmake).
>>
>>320493121
Thanks, anon!

I'm a scrub though, and I haven't played a fixed-angle survival horror in more than a decade, so I'll probably just stick with jap hard mode/western normal mode.

I've been replaying Blood for the preparations for Cryptic Passage since I've never played the expansion and right off the bat I have to say there's a huge difference between Lightly Broiled and Well Done. The cultists are much more relentless with their hitscan weapons on higher difficulty. I don't know how to feel about the levels too. There are some really good ones like the one which pays homage to The Shining and some really really bad ones, like an entire section dedicated to sewers or the power station.

I just played Clive Barker's Jericho for the first time on a whim. Not a great game by any stretch, but if you like Barker's unique blend of body horror , sado-sexualism and overdramatic dialog, it's got that in spades.
>>
>>320495173
Definition of brown and bloom.
>>
>>320489012
You definitely should play it again.
I played it for the first time in ages just recently, after a big doze of REmake HD remaster (which I highly recommend as well!), and it was still neat, atmospheric experience.

>>320492750
you could just emulate the PS1 original on PC. Should not be too hard to find.
>>
>>320498432
Yeah, I know, but >>320492521 mentioned a better re-release. I'll look into it to see what's different and if it's worth the hassle of patching it instead of just emulating the original in english.
>>
Replayed Silent Hill (1) during Halloween. It was still 2spooky as ever.

In case someone's looking to play the original SH games on PC, you can DL them here:

SH1 NTSC DDL:

SH2 DDL:

SH3 torrent:

SH4 torrent: Kickass torrents

And in case someone's once again new to this PC gaming stuff: Use a program like DaemonTools Lite to mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" works as a no-cd crack as well, and is included in the pack.

...and yes, they're all lostboy.exes.
>>
>>320498649
I really want to play through SH2 on PC, but controls are so needlessly retarded. What is perfectly snuggled on a gamepad on ps2 requries like 40 different inputs on PC. A lot of multiple actions that are supposed be on a single key are not diversified.

Playing Alien: Isolation on Hard at the moment and I am mildly disappointed at how easy it is. I have max of every gadget and materials and barely have to use anything.

I've played all 4 SH games on PC just fine, with KB only. The tank controls fit WASD / Arrows like a glove.

What exactly is your issue with the controls?
>>
>>320488348
The few horror games I find myself interested in these days turn out to be platform exclusives and I never play them, seems like.

Are there any actually spooky games for ps4? I wanna get spooped

The Alien is pretty good, but only the first 2 or 3 hours up until the Alien shows up after that it's 18 hours of hide and run to checkpoints

Should I finish Silent Hill 4?

It's been months since I finished 3, and started 4, it felt really weird, especially that combat with the pipe or whatever, you had to charge it up or something.
>>
>>320498649

Didn't they fix the 15 fps bug on Silent Hill 4 on PC?
>>
>>320499291

From what I remember hearing, the Alien AI is fucked up, so that playing on the hardest difficulty is actually easier than playing on the easiest.
