A lot of people say RE:0 is worse than REmake. I tend to agree because there's no item box, and you're constantly with an AI partner taking the whole theme of survival horror away from you.
It's still a great game though, easily up there, even more so because of pic related.

Resident Evil 6 is the best game in the series and it is weirdly the best possible approach for new player. After that you can decide if you like the series and can try RE4/5/0.

Chronologically it starts slightly before RE1, then during and then after so starting with 0 and then playing RE1 isn't a bad thing.

Start with REmake HD instead, it's also on Steam.
Or RE4 HD if you wanna be casual about it, because you can more or less play it with no prior knowledge of the series and it;s a great game on its own, but it doesn't play like the older ones so it's not as good of an entry point as REmake.

Probably could be best described as an entry point, because if you play it after any of the mainlines the reaction is just going to be "not very good, is it?".
Personally I'd say RE1, 2, 3 in that order, and then play the rest as you like or don't. But then I liked RE6 so whatever.

3 is a rehash adding nothing new to the table and not being as good as its predecessors at what it does. Rev 1 and 2 are something new while still taking the good parts of 4 and putting it into a fresh new game and learning from the mistakes of 5 and 6.
