The original, Super and Prime are the best and purest Metroid experiences.
Fusion and Prime 3 are also good if you want less exploration and more action. Though the entire main series and Prime series prior to Other M are all great.

The games main theme is fucking great but I honestly don't understand how you can defend tracks like Ancient Chozo Ruins.
The game is such a mixed bag in that area in a series that generally has damn good OSTs.

Really, all the games from Super to Prime 3. Metroid 1 and 2 aged like milk, and the less said about Other M the better.
