If you're thinking about the 390 you might consider a 290x instead, their usually much cheaper and are only 9% or so performance difference. Just make sure to get a non-reference cooler since the stock AMD coolers for that card are complete shit. The only difference between the 3xx series and the 2xx series is the drivers, the GPU cores are identical.

There's enough separate-but-equal merits to both that it's a tossup.
390 has more raw compute power and does better in synth benches.
More games are optimized with nvidia cards in mind and are likely to run equal or better on a 970.
Driver and manufacturer support is about equal for both, regardless of the memery.
With this in mind, go look up benchmarks specific to the games you're already planning on playing with your new card. If you want to play BF4 and TW3 or really whatever you plan on playing heavily, look up benches with those in mind.
Or just go with whatever you can get at a significantly better price.

I'm running a single 980 with a mild OC and a 4790k at stock, I've got TW3 installed on a solid state as well.
I get an easy 60fps at 1440p (with some of the more outright frivolous features reduced or pruned, in practice it looks pretty much identical to every-option-enabled and extra 20fps boost to minimum framerate and there's really no reason to do all-options-on unless you wanna see SLI titans stutter for the first time).

AMD cards do better than Nvidia cards in 4k, certainly, but they are still far from ideal.
If you drop $1000 on a nice 4K monitor, you can expect to burn plenty of multi-gpu setups at its altar for at least two more generations before a reasonable midrange single-card solution hits the market.
If you've got loads and loads of money to burn, then AMD cards are the way to go for 4K at present.
But for anyone who still has to do the math on living expenses vs recreational expenses, 4K is a straight-up bad idea right now. 1440p is the most I could recommend in good faith.

The difference is, you have to pay twice to get the 980 SLI while you only pay once for the 295X2.
Chart is outdated since they don't sell 295x2 anymore but when they did, it's not worth the price of paying 650 twice over paying 650 once. Besides, there are better cards now so I don't know why you're purposely posting old charts that don't include the 300 series in it.

What really happened is that the player just stood on top of a very high position and looked down from there. Then the game has to keep rendering and creating npcs to walk around. Player stayed up there until the game finally has to create and render more than 3.5gb ram worth of npcs. Then the card has to access the slow as fuck .5gb of c-u-c-k ram. That's when the entire card shits itself. And it was done all in 1080p. These situations are extremely rare, but it does happen. There is no 4k downsampling.
