It split the fanbase pretty divisively like you'd expect a huge step backwards to do. There were a lot of huge issues with the first game and it didn't do anything to make up for that. The biggest issue being that the cast is too big and every major party member is almost entirely irrelevant to the game. A lot of the characters feel that way, none of them really have any stake in the events of the games and are just doing stuff because they were told to most of the time.
