You don't have a hell of a lot of information of a board game being backed either, unless it's just a translation project of an existing foreign game or a sequel expansion to an existing game. Gameplay can also be very difficult to judge, I bought a card game at a con after talking to the dev and being explained the rules but I didn't get a chance to actually play the game until I got home. The game looks amazing, sounds great and runs like a backed up toilet.
