Not all of them do. But I suspect its because a lot of people like to make some overpowered hero character to represent who the creator wants to be and/or who the player ought' to look up to. Plus its a cheap way to add difficulty.

No, it's a completely new game with 16 gyms and a world tournament. And a new story which is passable.
Pokemon Glazed was pretty good, it should be one that everyone plays. (Unbiased opinion)

Sage dev here, 2 years would be an early estimate.
It took about 1.25 years to do pre-production stuff (make the pokedex/region conceept/character concepts), and make an early demo that went to the first gym with shitty tiles, and then the past 2 years since to overhaul all of the tiles, and re-release that demo with new tilees, which we released this past july, and to make everything up to the third gym, which will be out late feb/early march
I think 2 years from now we'll be at the 6th gym or so.

If you wanna play the demo that has all of our new tiles that goes up to the first gym that's here though.
We moved off /vp/ back in january and sinc then we've been able to make more rapid progress compared to the year before that, so hopfully that pace won't peter out.
