That was just the game logic bit of it, I'm not gonna pretend that I know the physics behind how useful it would be in a "real" lightsaber battle.

>>320408326

Star Wars NES, pretty much every 5th-gen game that wasn't a racing game, probably at least a hundred shitty mobile games/bargain-bin plug-and-play console toys/cd-roms found in cereal boxes. Star Wars is fucking collosal, you massively underestimate just how much shovelware it's collected by gravitational pull alone.

>>
>>320409063
I gotcha. From my limited knowledge of physics and mass, I would assume that swinging faster is better because only the hilt has noticeable mass. In contact between two blades there really isn't any force besides electrons making them not slide through each other.

Which is actually a great advantage of a lightsaber. Nothing material can block it.

In the OT the blades were "heavy" they basically acted like large swords and the actors were instructed to treat them as if they had mass.

Prequels fucked this all up of course.

Yeah, there's no noticable mass, but when you swing a lightsaber and it hits another lightsaber, you're still pushing against the other person holding said lightsaber. You're not putting momentum in the blade so much as you're directly transferring your own momentum into the other person. "Battering through their defenses" doesn't mean breaking their blade, it just means forcing them to move it out of the way so you cut them.

Just for shits and giggles, lets apply some actual real world physics to light sabers.

First
Dueling with light sabers would not be possible, since "light" is photons, which has no mass.
Thus in a light saber duel, you wouldn't be able to block or parry with another light saber, they would just go straight through each other.

Second.
Since we can see the projected light we know that it's not at all harmful, unless they simultaneously project high frequency, low wavelength photons which is basically gamma radiation.
Even if this is the case, you wouldn't be able to cut people with a light saber, just irradiate them to death.

Third.
Q: How is the length of the saber controlled?
A: Magic

Fourth.
A light saber would probably handle like a flashlight, and if the "blades" were able to connect, they would act like really unbalanced swords.
Which would be bad, since you want the pointy part of your sword to be somewhat heavy to help with momentum and impact when swinging it.

Man, so many things in movies and vidya are ruined if you study physics.
I just think of light sabers as actual swords made of some alien material which is manipulated by energy.

Nigger you're an idiot. Worse than the people that say blasters are lasers. The whole point of science is to observe shit and make conclusions based off our observations. If we observe particular properties but it's name implies properties we cannot observe, we simply observe that whatever they thought it was was wrong.

Light sabers are not literally light you retard, just like turbo lasers are not literally lasers. Fucking goggle this shit, it takes 5 seconds.

In jko if you open up the console, input helpusobi 1, then input g_SaberRealisticCombat 1. You can also input 2 or 3. It also means you can dismember corpses after death and cut enemies into many, many pieces.

If it was LITERALLY light then it would have certain properties. Unless energy focused through the crystals, or the properties of diatium somehow fundamentally changes the properties of light there is no way with our current understanding that lightsabers are literally light.

Yes we can and yes we will challenge the Canon explanation if it does not hold up scientifically. That is what it means to be an actual goddamn scientist and is the difference between using the scientific method and knowing physics. It is also very much in the tradition of science fiction.

Now do you actually want to study how lightsabers work or do you want to keep masturbating to how much textbook physics you've memorized?

You want me to make assumptions and predictions on fictional things which don't exist and is in no way able to be scientifically studied?
All i was doing what pointing out that this fictional thing is implausible with the understanding of physics.

>fundamentally changes the properties of light
If a "real" light saber was actually able to be observed in nature, as they are in the movies.
A scientist would NOT assume what you're claiming. You're a retard and like i said before, you don't know what you're talking about.

Without being able to further study it, the conclusion would be that it's an unknown element, not "light".
Of which there are far more of, which could potentially have such properties.

Do you want to debate HOW people conjure fireballs in fantasy vidya now?
Or do you just want me to assume that magic exists and go from there? In that case you win.

the AI is really improved. Also the opening level is a battle that puts the statement "relive the star wars battles for the first time" used to advertise battlefront to shame.

Seriously, you start out fighting off an assault on a base complete with chicken walkers, then you take a shuttle to a kind of second rate death star disguised as an asteroid (there really was no reason to celebrate galaxywide in ROTJ, the remnant are like the plague).

There's also a level on a sith temple plant that's like survival horror, beaten only by the final levels in Bunty Hounter as far as horror in SW games goes.

All I'm doing is pointing out that we know that already, and it's retarded. Of course lightsabers are impossible, or we'd have them already. It is much more interesting (and fun) to discuss how they -could- work, not why they wouldn't - that's just masturbatory "hurr durr I'm smarter than the writers" tier schlock.

>A scientist would not assume what you're claiming.
Yes, that's my point. It's dumb to say lightsabers are literally light because they don't behave like light at all, but for the surface appearance, and all explanations trying to push that would be massive unsupportable stretches.

I would be happy to discuss what kind of properties an element would need to behave similarly to lightsabers. I would be happy to reverse engineer a Saber depending on canon technical manuals and so on. That'd be fun. Just saying they can't work isn't.

If we want to have an actual discussion on magic or science in a fictional universe then yes, we need to suspend disbelief and approach the discussion in good faith, or there's no point.
