Let's say you're playing some sort of RPG where you can put points towards whatever attribute you want.
How do you know where to put your points when you've never played the game before and don't want to use a guide?
>>
The description of the stat?
>>
>>320402054
Logic, and then see how it is. If it's beyond shit, try something different.
>>
>>320402054
You play for a bit and save the points until you at least know some shit. Stuff like weapon requirements and so on.

Also in most games you can't go wrong with leveling basic shit like, str, hp, stamina etc. until your get the hang of things.
>>
Attack. Always attack. Speed too sometimes, you always want to kill the enemy faster than they can kill you. I always followed that rule and its never let me down.
>>
it's the role I feel like playing
don't you have any interests?
>>

>You play for a bit and save the points until you at least know some shit. Stuff like weapon requirements and so on.
Sounds a lot like what I would do.

Press the 'back' button and read the explanations xDDDD

This always triggers my autism. I play till about halfway through, then start over once I get a handle on the game.
>>
>>320402054

have you ever tried just picking the ones you like instead of trying to be a min max fag in a genre that is supposed to be about freedom?
>>
By putting the points into whatever lets me swing the biggest object for the longest time.
My first character for any rpg is always STR/END
>>
>read what stats do by checking the manual or the in-game tooltips
>put points in whatever I feel is lacking
Running out of stamina? Raise endurance. Not pushing out enough damage or want to use a specific weapon? Raise strength, etc
>>
>>320402054
>press the back button
>read the descriptions
>look at equipment and the icons that show scaling

If I could work it out on my first playthrough, nobody has any excuse.
>>
>>320402236
>save the points
You can't do that in Shin Megami Tensei, though. You have to assign points at the beginning.
>>320402223
>>320402550
>>320402796
Some games don't have explainations. I only used DaS as an example for the pic.
>>
>>320402773
>Health: increases max health
>Defense: decreases damage taken
>Game does not say how by how much for either
Which one do you pick?
>>
>>320402773
my nigga
>>
I make estimates based on what items I currently have that I can and cannot use, and their stats. I don't level a stat without seeing what I could use.
>>
>>320402987
Defense, I need to worry about potions/healing less, quantity-wise, and can keep fighting uninterrupted for longer.
>>
>>320402987
not that anon but obviously defense; each hitpoint is worth more that way, so each potion or cure is more effective if they heal a static amount.
>>
>>320402054
Go for logic and social skills the first time around so you can get the most out of the story. Later, when you have a better idea of how the other game mechanics work and what kind of combat you can expect, you can create a more combat oriented character.

Also I can't help but noticed you posted the stat screen for an action game, so this advice has no bearing on it.
>>
Anything that is strength related.
>>
HP and damage are almost always top picks.
>>
Play through the first few hours a couple of times. Test builds out, find weapon types you like, and restart. Once you feel that you have a grip on the mechanics, start over one more time, this time for keeps.
>>
The souls games are actually designed so that pumping all your points into one stat doesn't usually work so well. Figure out what stamina cap is and then put into whatever stat you want to be your main/hp
>>
So, what stats would I pick for SMT IV? Or, maybe SMT III. I don't know which one to pick first.
>>
Build faith and join the ranks of the best team. Int is for cheesers, dex is max weeb, and strength is for tryhard
>>
>>320403592
Magic always in smt, spam those weaknesses.
>>
>>320402987
HP, there is always some mechanic that bypasses the defense stat somehow and most games have some form of diminishing returns on defense to stop you from being an unstoppable juggernaut.
>>
>>320402054
there is a description to every stat

by further inspecting the gear you should notice that some symbols look similar to the ones you ve seen on the chracter screen.

if tsarting with a sorcerer or cleric one would explore the spells, again one should see that some symbols look similar to the ones on the character screen.
>>
>>320402054
Many games such as >pic say clearly in game what the stat is. Otherwise I'd use general experience with games in knowing which stats are useful or just simply not being a fucking retard and knowing what words mean.

Just max out charisma. Easy cheat for every game.
>>
>>320402054
Probably HP untill it's obviously not going to be an issue for me, then damage stats.
>>
>>320402236
I remember spending points in social in VTM:B and then being completely fucked endgame because everything was combat.

The points-into-attributes systems in games is inherently flawed as you can't know what to expect. A player that has never played a game like Dark Souls is bound to make a shit build as he progresses without reading guides. It just takes some experience.
>>
Put it on int if you're rolling a caster
Put it on str if you a rolling a meleer
How fucking hard is that?
>>
>>320404518
This. Putting points into anything else means you like being fucked in the ass.
>>
1. Defense
2. Attack
3. Everything else
>>
can i survive by playing without fucking up ?
then strenght
on Des/Das/BB i just put everything on endurance/strenght and when i'm almost done with the game something on stamina to survive more than 1 hit
for shit games that i can't outplay npcs by rolling/moving or i generally make casters

>How do you know where to put your points when you've never played the game before and don't want to use a guide?

Use your brain
>>
>>320402956
Values such as Strength, Charisma, etc. do the same thing in most games. Exceptions are rare.

all points into luck all day every day

>>320402054

nearly every single game that allows stat allocation has some baby fun time land where npcs tell you what stats do, if you don't read that isn't the games fault you don't know what stats do
>>
Always level Dexterity, never Strength because DEX fags always win.
>>
>>320402054
You don't
>>
>>320405716
Both? I don't know.
>>320405870
Like I said in the thread, not all of them do.
See >>320402956
>>
>>320402054

Base it off of need. Getting killed quickly? Get more health. Need higher str/dex to use something good you found? Put points there. Want to up the damage of what you are using? Put points there. Want more stamina/carry weight for better equipment? Do it.

I have a way harder time when the game asks me to make my character up front, and just drops a huge list of stats/skills into my lap. I restarted Dragon Age Origins like 4 times trying to figure out what the fuck to start out with, and ended up just quitting because I got bored of doing the intro over and over.

Demons/Dark souls though, you pretty much can't screw over your character even if you tried. You'd have to do something like roll a thief and only ever put points into resistance, and even then you could fix it later anyway.
>>
>>320406154

then you read the MANUAL that comes with the game
>>
>>320406154
Than I dont think I want to answer this.
>>
Just look up where all the stat boosting items are in the game so whatever build you decide on you'll still be good at everything.
>>
>>320406272
>start DS game with a DEX build
>get rare drop STR weapon
>decide to completely change build direction just to use it
I have no discipline...
