Final Fantasy 10 HD
I've been trying to play through all the commonly recommended FF games (so far I've gone through 6, 7, and 9) since I've always liked JRPGs but haven't ever really played Final Fantasy games. I just started so I can't say for sure how much I like it, but FF10 is on a much slower boil than any other FF game I've played. I can't help but think of FF9 where the game starts and you immediately pull off an airship kidnapping, then go save a dude from being petrified. In 10 you wake up after a thousand years, go scuba diving with some pseudo-Russians, then follow an athlete and a summoner around because you've got fuck all else going on. Also weapon skills feel like FF9 but dumber. Summons and overdrives are neat, I just wish the game would let me take the wheel. 5 hours in and they're tutorializing me on enemy elemental weaknesses. I get it, water enemies are weak to lightning, ice enemies are weak to fire. In any other game it'd be up to you to figure out that stunningly difficult puzzles.
So far I'd give it a 6/10 but I'm told it gets better. I hope that's true.
FFX HD Remaster, 7/10, dem Lulu's tits, but I didn't remember how linear that game was when I rented it about 10 years ago.

I didn't think the keyboard controls were that bad, I was able to cruise through the game in about 6 hours without much difficulty. I'll admit they take a little getting used to
I was annoyed about the inability to back track, but I only missed 1 thing since I try really hard to be a completionist as I go.
My biggest beef was the overall difficulty is low and the short length of the game

But as I said, DS1 level design is barely better than DS2, and very inconsistent. If you forget about the elevator after the medusa that teleports you into a volcano, and the other 2-3 retarded things because of cut content, there is nothing wrong with the level design. It's still a labyrinth, enemies are have better placement, and the game is way harder.
Areas are bigger, exploration is better, finally more humanoid bosses, and some areas are just way better looking than DS1.
Also fantasy setting>dark fantasy setting.

The linearity's why I liked 10 over the rest, personally.
I always hated it in the older games, where they'd just throw you into a boring green overworld, with no indication of where to go, where monsters become stronger, and where every landmark you find while exploring is just a samey dungeon with recolors of the monsters in the last dungeon.
Smaller areas with a more clear start and finish, little secrets to discover in them, and the fast travel you unlock later, just makes the game more fun in my humble opinion.

FF7 Crisis Core, probably a 8/10.
The mechanical parts of the game are really solid (graphics, sound/music, controls, ARPG combat feels fine). I really dislike the DMW bullshit as a mechanic, and the story is almost offensively stupid. Pretty enjoyable to play outside of that, so above average grade, but not the near-perfection that a 9 conveys.

I feel like FFX has way more recolor-type bullshit going on than 7,8 or 9. The rocks-paper-scissor combat type goes like this:

>swap out for party meember that is that enemy's weakness
>one-shot enemy with appropriate weakness
this sounds like something from every rpg, but I'm not talking about magic types. Enemies are either "dies to heavy attack (auron or khimari), enemy dies to light attack (tidus, wakka), enemy dies to magic (lulu with appropriate spell or yuna), enemy is mechanical (enemy dies to rikku stealing from it)".
It really got to me for some reason, I didn't like it at all. I will say it had a good antagonist though; I was sick of seymour's shit after the first cutscene, too bad he wasn't the big bad.

Fair point. The deciding factor for me over those, though, is primarily how the combat itself is. I, personally, despise ATB systems. I much prefer being able to take my time and plan my moves, and as far as turn-based games go, you've got to admit that FFX has a pretty huge variety of attacks and strategies to choose from. It's all a matter of preference, of course.
And Seymour was pretty fucking GOAT. Naturally I called that he was a villain the instant I saw his hair, yet he never failed to surprise me.
