It's improved a lot in the expansion packs, and I have a feeling when all the expansion packs are out it will be a really solid game.I wish they made it more open world like Sims 3, but from what I understand people who had shitty computers (teenage girls) whined and complained about the sims 3 being too much for their rust buckets to handle, so Maxis bent to their whims and made it non-open world.
I think a compromise Maxis should have done is make it naturally open world, and have an option to make it non open for all the teen girls out there whining on their rust buckets about not being able to play with their dream husband.

Sims 3 is better for customization and the open world.
