I don't know why people have this misguided idea that smash roster should be somehow a bastion of gaming icons or only have obscure nintendo characters. Literally is every guest character is a cross promotion material or popular demand, much like all guest characters in fighting games of all time. Xenoblade is coming out so they bring Shulk. They want megaman, but capcom is making a new streetfighter aswell so put in Ryu. Squeenix is remakinf FF7 so put in Cloud, there's a new Fire Emblem game that isn't even out but hey have this characters, maybe you might want to check out the game when it comes out. Etc, etc.
The only real outlier is Pacman but again Bandai Namco is the one actually making the game.

but on the topic of whether kids/nintendo fans recognize WFT, it's definitely a possibility. wii sold a shit-ton, Wii Fit sold a shit-ton, so there's a good chance the Brawl players saw their parents playing Wii Fit (or even did it themselves, depending on their age)
