when there's a question

When it's set manually by the player who uses critical thinking to figure out the location of the objective.
>>
you mean a quest marker? whenever you think the place the player needs to go next isn't obvious enough. this varies with how stupid you think your players are

More often it varies in how extensive the game creator wants to be with descriptions, and if it's bethesda they don't want to be bothered anymore.

Never.
At least some games explain it with, "We already got the coordinates".
>>
Always.

It's like people forgot how shitty Morrowind was with this. Quest NPCs kept giving shitty directions and you had to find tiny artifacts from a fucking humongous dungeons, and they were really fucking well hidden as well.

you entitled gamers! just turn of the quest marker then!!!!!
>>
Typically:

When you are hinting at something mysterious, unknown or unsolved (ex: ??? liquid).

At the end of a question, or rhetorical question.

By itself to indicate that the speaker has no clue what the fuck

It is okay if the game is made for consoles.
>>
> Are you searching for ancient artifact? Go to Mt.Generic north-west from this village and speak with Henry the Hermit. He should be in the shack on the top of the mountain.

If quest logs are present, then it shouldn't be a problem not using quest markers. You may want to implement the note system so you could write some notes for each quest.

Anyone got journal entry with a way to azura cave? I still have nightmares about that.

Imagine DaS with a quest marker.
You must defeat 0/2 gargoyles, 400m remain until first bell.

He's giving a detailed example of where a question mark would be appropriate in a video game like the OP wanted.

never
it just implies bad game design
also the user base having very low attention span
>>
>>320379149
assuming "quest marker" and answering:
honestly it depends on what kind of game you're hoping to make. Mindless MMO styled "look, you're just here for those 4 bearaptor horns" then fuck it, quest marker away.
But if you actually expect some of the action to come from the search, then maybe leave it out.
At the very least it'd be nice if they were a bit more like >>320379214 but this is really only paired with the game actually giving you descriptions you could reasonably conclude the location you're looking for.
>>
>>320379908
If by detailed you mean totally incoherent and not in proper English leading the entire thing to be barely legible, I agree.

and off by default.

The correct solution.
>>
What comes first? The poorly designed open world, or the quest marker?
>>
>>320379439
The solution to that is to make less shitty directions, not to dumb down the entire process to the point where it feels like you're going through the quests on autopilot. The more you're forced to figure shit out on your own, the more engaged you will be with the game.
>>
>>320380021
You can't get by without quest markers in modern games because the games are designed with the markers in mind. World design and quest instructions don't have to be intuitive or detailed because they can just stick a flashing arrow on the screen
>>
>>320379149
It's there to save bandwidth on Gamefaqs servers.
>pretending that you knew where the fuck to go before quest markers existed
>b...b...ut I'm a special snowflake!
No, what happens is you get stuck and get bored and move on to casual shitfest 2 before you find some shit on gamefaqs then pretend you found it out all on your own.

When it's over a broad area and you have to use visual, textual and audible clues to find out the exact location.

No because retards like to use it too much. They know if they call everyone "kid" people will call them out on it so they just scream millenial instead.

I think they certainly have their place. I would prefer it if they were only used to mark the beginning of quests, rather than the beginning, middle, and end. I don't think there's any games that actually do that, though.
There are better ways of guiding the player than big ugly markers. Like completing some arbitrary event and somehow saying "you'd better go tell ____ of the situation" or something like that.

Waiting for a game that uses Minecraft/Miasmata map mechanics and makes players actually use the map.
>>
>>320382507
well if the journal was well written instead of written by monkeys, it would say "go north from X location" instead of something so vague.
>>
>>320381961
that was actually the point i dropped the game
>>
>>320379439

Some NPCs gave you wrong directions on purpose because it was part of the quest's story
>>
Quest markers should only be limited to locations characters be able to point you to. It's stupid that the niglet who told me to go there can't just give me a basic direction instead of explaining something in plain sight of both.

>>
>>320379149

One of the few ways mods can improve skyrim in any sort of significant way is fixing the quest log/directions enough that you can disable the markers and still do just fine, finding your own way.
>>
The only time you shouldn't have one is when the destination is supposed to be a mystery

"Oh, I don't know, Anon, perhaps it's behind one of these FIVE DOORS!"

>quest marker appears above the second one
