If it's portable only, no. I like my 3DS but I rarely touch it.

I'm sure the final product (if the patent is actually going to be the NX controller) will be heavily modified from the diagrams in the patent. I understand the Wii U Gamepad was kind of a clusterfuck, but everything on it made sense. For what purpose would a touchscreen that's literally the entire front of the controller serve? Your hands would be blocking a good chunk of the screen

They are trying to reinvent the wheel. It's not unlike them and for better or worse it moves the industry forward. Just like when any other console manufacturer does something innovate. Scroll wheels could act as regular buttons and serve a secondary function. Not that hard to understand.
Aesthetically the OP picture looks pretty cool, but when it comes to function there are some pretty glaring problems with it. Even if it was made by Nintendo, it would only be a prototype.

That would be so sick for emulation. Wrap a skin on the screen to look like whatever you are emulating and have the screen in the middle.
I was think the same thing about non essential functions for buttons to made into touch screen buttons. I'd still like physical buttons for the important stuff, just because I'm more confident in it performing every time.

Because, physical buttons. If the NX really is a hybrid handheld/console with a shared library this helps with the issue, although it isn't necessarily a long term solution to the shrinking handheld market.
