What happened to 3rd-Person Action-Adventure-Exploration-Games like Legacy of Kain and Shadowman?
>>
Aren't they THE most popular genre on the consoles?
Although the exploration part became kinda atrophied a bit.
>>
>>320357578
No, the most popular is shit open world with no depth or fun.
>>
>>320357724
Well, if they're fun or not is an entirely different question. Still the same genre.
>>
>Shadowman
Tried to play that recently for the first time. Lost interest when I realized it was basically a series of same-looking mazey location design. Not sure if it was intentional or just limitations of the visuals they could get at the time, but a map would have been handy.

As for the genre in general, feels like open-world games somewhat threw them in the penalty box, alongside the AA publishers in general which used to make these kind of games.

Shame about LOK: Dark Sun getting canned, as it could have fit the bill, despite looking a little derivative.

>>320357825
They're sure as fuck not action adventure games. Just open world for the most part.
>>
>>320357894
Open world isn't really a genre on its own. It's just a quality of a game, which can be at its core a 3rd-Person Action-Adventure-Exploration-Game.
>>
>>320357359
There are stil plently coming, you just got to look for them yourself because they are not the mainstream genre anymore.
Also the retarded label "metroidvania" covers a ton of action adventures.

Nah, the levels are pretty varied but it does look similar in appearance. There's still enough variation to keep you going.

Also, the game did come with a map.
Pic related.

>>320357359
You didn't play new Batman games?
>>
>>320357359
They became chest high wall 3rd person pipe level shooters.

>tfw modern normies would suck at these legendary games
>>
>>320357359
Bloodborne and the Souls games. They're all I really play these days.
>>
>>320359839
Both lack the adventure aka puzzle part.
>>
>>320357359
As several people pointed out, they turned into open world games.
Although more expensive to create, it's easier in the sense that they don't have to have specific level design for progression and pacing when they can just litter the map with points of interest (challenges, side quests, main quests, items to loot for exploration, etc).
Devs do this so their games seem like players can get their money's worth by littering the map with content - Sadly, not all the content will always be good.

Puzzles are not adventures

Souls have adventure part
>>
>>320360000
The adventure in action adventure comes from point&click adventure. Using aquired abilites and tools to solve puzzles and open up more areas is what the genre is all about.
>>
>>320360152
Do you only consider block puzzles to be real puzzles?
There's gating between areas, hidden switches and pressure plates, characters and key items required to open those.
Adventure games aren't really required to be as puzzle heavy as point and click adventures to be considered an action-adventure game.

Arkham Asylum. Sequels too but in an open world. You're also starting to get really specific with your qualifications.

City and Origins are hub-worlds
>>
>>320361519
Admittedly I haven't played Origins, but how the fuck City is a hub-world. What would you even consider to be the main hub?
