Definitely not even close to my GOTY, but I honestly thought it was much better than anything telltale has ever done.
Bloodborne is easily my game of the year, because it really builds up very well on the han solo is killed by his son kylo ren of the previous games. I wish Dark Souls 3 would have gone with Bloodborne's backstab system, though.

i played through the witchers 1 + 2 literally just to prepare for playing witcher 3, and imo it's not really necessary. there are a couple of minor plot details you might miss out on but the witcher 3 intro catches you up on the events of 2 pretty well, and 1 barely matters at all (the decisions you made in that game don't even get imported)

I recommend playing W2 because it is a good game, but in someparts it gets kinda boring.

I'm on the fence about buying it. It came out here earlier this year but it got pretty middling reviews. How does it stack up to Xenoblade in terms of story? It looked too MMO like for my tastes

Not that anon, but I'd agree that it's my favorite game this year.
Main story definitely suffers from the open world aspect. I feel more attached to all the Xenoblade 1 characters by far. The thing is, there is just so much stuff to do, so many new mechanics. I've thrown in 50 hours and there's still a shitton to do. For a first attempt at this kind of genre, this game is really good.
Disclaimer: I'm only mostly through the main story and haven't really hit the climax yet.

Story is interesting but not great, characters are okay, there are at least 2-3 songs that will make you want to kill yourself, menus on menus on menus, reading the manual is mandatory if you want to have any clue as to how the mechanics work, and 30fps/720p is painful for someone used to playing on a high-end PC.
However, I really think the combat is fun and the world itself is second to none. The main emphasis is on exploring and everywhere you turn you're seeing something new. Nothing feels copy/pasted. There's no enemy scaling at all so you can and will get run the fuck over by high level monsters if you go to the wrong neighborhood. It truly feels like you're just trying to survive on a crazy alien planet that doesn't give two shits about you. The gamepad actually works very well and makes sense for this type of game, XCX has the best fast travel system ever because of it. The freedom of movement is incredible, you see some shit and you can get to it guaranteed. Overall, it's not a perfect game but it's 100% worth a play.
It feels like a slightly above average traditional jrpg with the coolest and largest open world and associated mechanics welded onto it.
