What is your opinion about the recent 恋×シンアイ彼女 controversy?

For those not in the know, it was marketed as a ren'ai game, but the main heroine leaves you in her route. After you finish all the other routes, there's an unlockable epilogue for the main one, but nothing really changes in it, you stay apart. Japanese buyers were super unhappy about it.
>>
I don't know enough about the game to form an opinion. Free bump for you, as this is not another Smash or Kojima thread.

I've never really understood the assblast about an ending that you didn't want or expect, especially in a japanese medium where actual endings are few and far between.

Isn't it the creators right to tell the story they want?
>>
>>320353828
Main girls tend to be bland, yeah, but this is something else entirely.

>>320353946
Yeah, but there are also buyer's expectations for ren'ai games.
>>
Does the girl leave you for another man?

>>
>>320355965
>Is the main girl the one in the right?
Yeah.

MC decides to be a writer, writes a book hoping to reach her feelings, she comes disguised to book signing, leaves without MC realizing it was her, the end.
>>
Pretty stupid for a developer to dig there own grave. What did they expect would happen?

The route in question was written by Niijima Yuu. He wrote stories with similar elements in the past, but without the fizzle-out slap-in-the-face ending.

Also it seems the VN brand will have a booth at Denkigai Matsuri and will be selling goods. I'll have to go see if it sells.
>>
>>320356145
I see. Left girl looks a whole lot like Yui from Oregairu.

I guess that's a pretty alright epilogue.Would be cool if it'd have an epilogue 2.0 or something though. Where girl dedicates a musical piece or something to MC or something.

At least that's MC's and main girl's have a much better fate than the characters in 5cm per second though. At least for them, the possibility of them coming together in the future still exists.
>>

>>
>>320356635
Or an extended remake.

If you know Monobeno (the "smug loli" game), it originally had a rather sad true end and buyers were unhappy about it too. So the maker rereleased it at full-price as Monobeno: Happy End with long after stories for all routes, many extra H-scenes and well, a happy end. The re-release was a great success.

So it's not like all is lost this time, but who knows what this maker will do.
>>
>>320351730

You shouldn't treat a story like a product. There's no reason to play a visual novel if you already know how the story is going to play out. As far as I'm concerned, once you've read one story about high school sweethearts falling in love, that's it, you don't need to read another one just like it. Frankly I'm surprised the Japs aren't praising this game. "Thank you for saving us from this tedious bullshit. I was so afraid this would just be another normal romance. Thank you for doing something different."

Because the fact of the matter is, if you aren't doing something unique, you're doing nothing at all.
>>
>>320356887
It is so fucking gay that writers have to give into this wish fulfillment faggotry. If VNs like Subarashiki Hibi or Cross Channel had "happy end" fan-disks made, then I would be the one getting triggered.
>>
>>320357853
>As far as I'm concerned, once you've read one story about high school sweethearts falling in love, that's it, you don't need to read another one
Execution is far more important than synopsis, in all forms of media. Basic plots for most games, movies, stories, etc., are very simple and are widely reused. It's how the story is told that makes each work an individual piece of art.
>>
>>320351730

People who play these games don't want something different. They want the same thing over and over: girls who fall for them and will be their lover forever and ever, amen.

They already have enough girl trouble in real life, so the thought of their fictional VN girlfriend leaving them would probably destroy what little sanity they have left.

Nipponese males require all sorts of trigger warnings for possible NTR content, and untagged NTR on H sites will get you dogpiled like you won't believe

With this you get the unspoken promise of a pure love story with a pure heroine with "and they loved each other ever after" ending.

It's the same people who rage and spew nonsense when their favorite idol is revealed to have a boyfriend.

Do you want prove it doesn't or would you just deflect those as exceptions? Do you know that by mere nature of having only one "winner" per story you're likely to find more instances where a character with a particular trait doesn't "win" than when it does? All you really need is a tangible amount of instances where your meme doesn't hold true, which there is, but you rather get all up in that confirmation bias instead of facing the fact.
I'm all for memes but I really can't stand it when idiots start believing internet jokes are real.

I play games for stories so it wouldn't bother me too much, but I think the target audience want a happy ending with a couple or something.

It's like that recent Zestiria game. They advertised it with a cute girl and then in the game she leaves the party about 8 hours in (she does technically rejoin for a bossfight to kill her master and you can visit her in the game, play has her in the short DLC extra but still she leaves the party very abruptly) and gets replaced by a new girl. Personally, while I liked the first girl I didn't think she fit in with the party well at all and I liked the character dynamics with the new girl better, so I enjoyed that. But I also understand that people who saw the first girl and liked her would feel betrayed that she's removed from the party so suddenly.

I guess you can apply this to any game that uses a character bait-and-switch? Like, I enjoyed MGS2 surprising me with Raiden because I liked how the game used him and Snake, but then if you're a big fan of Snake you'd feel pissed.

The problem here as far I can tell is that this game's big main drain is this girl, so if you keep the player from having that then he'll feel like he wasted his time.

It's a preference thing.

Shit nigga what are you doing. You are literally retarded.
>>
>>320367015
Are you a woman?
>>
>>320367463

Oh, yeah.

Correction: I play story-based games for stories not because I like the design or voice or personality of a character. Gameplay trumps both.
>>
>>320363191
they dont, it is just a very convient tool in writing. It gives the push that initially brings the two together. Usually it ends up with "remember your promise? No. Well you promised when we were young and that is why I decided to talk to you again". Same with knocking someone over and taking a peek at her pantsu. It is just there to give her a reason to talk with you
>>
I admit I would be pissed if I bought some VN expecting romance and sex and got that shit. Make no mistake, the girl is fucking someone else.

No its not too late, but taking classes in uni is a twoedged sword. At the one end it gives you a push to study to make sure you pass classes, at the other hand you have some retarded cringy weebs in your class that makes you want to hammer bullets in your skull

I'm not even a fan of the genre, but you have to be fucking retarded if you think you can throw a curve ball like that in a fucking dating sim and not give the player some happy resolution in the end. It's practically a bait and switch, so the backlash is perfectly warranted.

That said, if the story is truly good, it'll go down in history as such, backlash or not.

There is no controversy, it's been getting better ratings and reviews since the first few days after the initial asspain

This is why the concept of Bad, Normal, Good and True END exist. Just watch them announce a fandisk containing 1 or 2 those endings.

I played Umineko once and liked the mystery stuff, and I like Phoenix Wright.

Are there any good mystery VNs?

VN about falling in love. Usualy overcoming drama.

It's very rare to see one where you don't get the main girl

Tokeijikake no Leyline series. The first game might get an English patch released is not totally far future.

http://www.japancrush.com/2014/stories/akb48-members-attacked-by-chainsaw-wielding-fan-reactions.html

"Japanese idol group AKB48 is no stranger to the media, as it is often involved in member scandals and publicity gimmicks. However, a horrific incident at an AKB48 meet-and-greet event on the afternoon of May 25 got more attention than the marketing or tabloid ploys ever do: Japanese and international media alike are abuzz with the story of how a 24-year old man attacked two AKB48 members with a saw, causing injuries to their heads and hands."

To indicate that the VN itself is untranslated as well. And it's not like it's hard to look for a VN using its Japanese title, you know. VNDB will take even that.

How do you mean leave? Did she have a fall out with the player character?
Either way I love otakushits getting buttblasted so it sounds hilarious. Even 2D girls won't stay with them.

but the people who buy visual novels aren't the kind of people to appreciate it, they just want waifus, which they'd reasonably expect.

Personally, I think the whole situation is a combination of bad writing, missing the point, and not knowing your target audience.

The VN media has a lot of play, and it seems a bit crazy to limit it to an ending that would anger your fan base. You can use the ending for a "normal" or "bad" end instead, and even make it mandatory to go through it to get to the "love ever after" end. Especially since the game was marketed with the implication that it had that type of story.

You could say deviating from the intended ending is messing with artistic vision but VN are made because you can introduce more scenarios than a book or movie. They're there to give people choice and agency in the story. Writers have to write different situations and stories for VN anyway.

Even if such a thing would breach characteristics of the characters, you can do a time skip a la Toradora's Ami or that Drug-that-makes-you-Dream's Drug Girl (forgot the names) End and get to a time when the characters could be together, which is better than leaving your customers hanging and teasing them with implications.
>>
>>320375415
You have to keep in mind that combinations of hair and eye colours are finite so you can't produce original designs forever.
>>
>>320358075
This guy knows his stuff. 90% of time the main heroine sucks terribly.
>>
>>320377560
One of advantages that VNs have over most books is that you can include short scenarios or endings based on what ifs
>>
>>320374498
>injuries
how bad are we talking? did he cut them off? just scrapes, or are they limp and dangling or missing fingers?
>>
You don't deny a man his right of conquest. What the hell is the point of a game where you chase after girls if it's impossible to have a good end with the main fucking heroine.
>>
>>320378191
Because even virtual girls don't want you.

>>320378319

>>
>>320378191
that perfectly describes mario, too, you know
>>
If the plot is anything concerning anti-pandering or bizarro-pandering, it's automatically
encompassed under "shit". If you can't write something emotional without needing to go "fuck you" on the player, you suck. Forced drama is literally the plague of weebshit, it's cheap "omg so unfair like ryal lyfe =(" vomit.

>>320377560

The key that fucks the whole thing up is that "one true ending" tag you see on vndb. Do not make a shitty true ending, period.

>>320378781

You don't pay a hundred dollars to see Peach love Mario and them having sex. Do you?

>>320378854
Uups, sorry for not making another thread about Kojima in Smash.
>>
>>320378781
Not really, you have no idea what Mario and Peach are doing off-screen (most games hint towards them being together at times).

But we're not talking about those kinds of games, we're talking about galge where the girls are the centerpiece, not the gameplay. If the ending is ambiguous you can live but if it downright tells you that they don't stay together then it's a failure

Or like in Need for Speed Most Wanted, take away your "sweet car," race people to reacquire it, by the time you get to the end of the game you have a better car anyways and don't give a shit, but then you have to escape in "muh sweet car" when you stopped giving a shit about it for a ending. More of that shit right?

It's more interesting than just a generic romance story, at least. I'm glad the writer didn't feel like he had to pander to his audience.
