She could just be avoiding failure because she's been fortunate at times. Sometimes, people just get lucky. Some people get lucky a lot, over and over. It's just chance.
To have characters' fortunes always correspond perfectly with how good they are at things would overlook that fact and undermine the integrity of the book's universe.
