In DMC4 I don't think Dante tried once. He essentially skipped through every event taking nothing seriously. He was so confident in himself he let Nero play to feel significant despite being able to handle the entire thing solo.
1, 2, and 3 saw him struggle but those were coming of age sort of titles.
Then again almost the same could be said about Bayonetta.....

Main thing is that we really don't know just how strong Dante is in DMC4. He barely seemed to be trying. Also people act like Bayonetta's summoning powers make her invincible when it's been shown they can be smacked down. And hell, one of the demons in B1 was basically Phantom, who Dante beat up multiple times in DMC1.

See, here comes the main difference between Dante and Bayonetta: Dante can take a lot of the punishment dealt to him, he gets impaled etc. all the time and its nothing to him. Bayonetta, on the other hand (at least in cutscenes), never even lets herself get hit. This battle is like a fight between a CON build and a DEX build.
