I was in the same situation until this year. If you do plan on upgrading then be sure not to skimp on certain parts.
It feels fucking good going from having a game that runs at 20 fps on 800x600 to 1080p 120fps (monitor refresh rate) on max settings.

that video is even nicer, because it shows the dynamically rendered skymap, which is a considerably lower resolution. That shows just how little of the environment is actually part of the current scene. The distant stuff is all rendered offscreen and then used as skybox
