I think Chara is supposed to be your character from all the other games you ever played. Similar to the "what if a character in the game besides you could save" idea, I think Chara is "what if your player-character stopped following orders".

Chara is not you. He's the disembodied soul of the fallen child. When you named him, he resurrected and latches onto Frisk. If you go the genocide route, he draws from your own strength and determination (As you are a very powerful being from the Undertale universe's perspective) until he is able to fully assert himself. At which point he gets complete control of Frisk, usurping you.
