It's obvious that the remake is going for a realistic style.
When it comes to the anime stylings, Nomura is still excellent at artwork and character design, but that just doesn't translate over to 3D or realism well.
Although maybe that's kind of the point. Cloud's Smash self is a giant homage to Cloud as a character, while the remake is a reinterpretation of everything; maybe Cloud looking like a scrawny meth addict, while making sense from a story perspective, was part of that new interpretation?
