And ever since then then the venue has fucking stank. You walk in there for the second day and get hit with this blast of BO and it is 100% the smash players.

I think the issue is that people who aren't already super interested in Melee just see it as a competitive game that only has depth because of abuse from broken, unintended mechanics, and for that reason feel disenchanted with it. If Melee was mechanically polished and not as exploitable as it is, Brawl would have probably been close to on par with it in the competitive scene, and Sm4sh would have definitely surpassed it, in my opinion.

Because if the game is not being played as intended, then either the devs fucked up the game or the players are fucking with the game. Either way, it's a clear sign that the game is broken. Of course, in this case it means that the game gets to stay competitive for years and years, which is a great thing, but from any other aspect, Melee is not a good game. It's like having Mario Kart tournaments where someone learned how to abuse a bug to make himself drive faster. Sure, other people can learn the bug, but then they need to discover how to break the game in other ways to get the edge.
It's a rabbit hole, and it's either going to end up having a ceiling cap where players can't learn anything more, or the game is going to be abused in a way that's considered straight up cheating/unfair, and once either of those things happens, the competitive scene will stagnate and probably drop off. If the game was played as intended, then this situation would have never occurred.

Tapping A instead of holding A in DKR legit does that, but you don't see anyone complaining about that, and neither about Snaking in MKDS, people just don't give a shit, but they harp on Melee because it's more popular than those games.
