No kidding. When the cult leader was giving his 10 page speech I was this close to flipping shit. And then it had next to no relevance outside of slight Shimizu development. Though he was shafted anyway so I'm not sure why the author even bothered to include it. Theend of the world never ended up really being anything, and in all honesty were the only moments in the Manga where I was bored.
Maybe we're just missing some deep symbolism here but to me it just seems like padding.

Honestly, I don't really have a choice anymore. She's so dependant on me that she has nowhere to go. Her parents are abusive shitlords that pretty much threw her at me happily when she was only 14 despite me being 22, so she can't go back to them. The problem with Punpun that people don't understand is that at every moment, by everyone, he was told to just brush it off. This culminates with the scene withhis father talking to Sachi about how he had the world on his shoulders
People go around blaming him, but this is a cause and effect. He had issues. No one gave a shit, his parents least of all, to help him because they had issues as well. And what happened to Aiko is just as much a culmination of all the shit that happened to her as well. The moral is a bleak one, that everyone is fucked up and has issues, and they are never obvious, as shown in the epilogue withHarumi speaking so casually then crying. Those tears are that realization.

Any character could make their lives amazing if you had the omnipotent control of their character progression and made all the ideal choices for them.
