Halo 2 was still going until the servers shut down. I hear that something about the way the servers worked meant that as long as you never turned off the game you could keep getting in matches, so there were a handful of people playing up until like a month after everyone else, just endlessly getting matched up together.

I lost interest in shooters because people keep wanting a new one. It's like game crack for people. They keep needing newer and more of a fix. I would be satisfied with just a big H3 community again.

Halo 3 was the pinnacle of my online gaming experience. After it died I moved to PC, since it was really the only reason to own an Xbox at all.

Shit was so fun. I swear the party system killed communication on xbox. Eventually you'd see games where everyone had a mic but was in their own little bubble and nobody talked to each other.
Despite its limitations in forge compared to the new games, it was where all the great custom game modes were made. I can't think of any other game that I had more fun on.

It's not my favorite shooter ever, but the Halo series in general was an example on how to build a world. It had God-tier music, writing, lore, and art direction, Halo 2 and 3 probably had the best graphics on their respective consoles, and the gameplay's really solid, even though it popularized a lot of things that make shooters generic and boring these days. I've admittedly played better shooters since I played Halo, but old Bungie was a fucking amazing company.
But now we have 343i putting none of the heart or soul into a dying franchise with only a little sign of improvement in the newest installment, and Bungie locked into a contract with a mediocre MMO and most of the important people there gone.
I'll never forget what the Halo series used to be, and I'll probably replay the original games until I'm senile, and maybe even beyond.

I only ever played 1 and 2 heavily with a few hours of multiplayer in 3 because I didn't want to pay for Xbox Live.

Reach suffered from feature creep. They shoved forge, invasion, firefight, campaign and multiplayer all into one game with a ton of extra features and as a result it has a quantity>quality feel. I've spent way more time in Reach but H3 was better overall.
