What kind of game (or games) would it take to fix Sonic? You've got an average development team, a decent budget, and 2 years under your belt. What do?

3D remake of the first 3 games, like sonic generations but all levels are 2D

You have three Sonics, make each kind of game focus on something, classic is mostly a platformer with the usual replay/speedrun factor, Modern is focused on gottagofastholyshit like the levels from Unleashed and Adventure, and Boom is an adventure collectaton like Banjo Kazooie where you play as the sonic team working together, solving puzzles and beating bad guys

Have it so that you play as Sonic at the start, and after you complete his story, you unlock other characters with other playstyles, as well as the story told from their point of view. Have a few team ups here and there, but nothing too close to 06. It'd be cool to play as Silver again, but better this time. Also have each character complete the same stages, but in different orders, or have the same order, but have each character have their own personal route. Chaos Emeralds would obviously play a part in the story, but you have a choice as to who gets what color, instead of having each character getting the same emerald and retconning each other. It'd also be nice to be able to play as Super Sonic in stages, as well as Shadow and Silver, plus a few super callbacks? Burning Blaze, maybe? I'm basically asking for a modern S3&K, but with more variety and freedom. I just thought of all that with the top of my head, but this would be pretty sweet, in my opinion.

I was playing Dino Run earlier and I was thinking "You know what? This game has physics like the old Sonic games."

/v/ could easily show up Sonic Team by making a Dino Run expy with Sonic skins. Just copy the physics exactly, replace eating lizards with just bopping them or spinning through them and maybe add a couple bosses. Sure, it's simplistic - just your character running away from an unbeatable wall of death - but it's more Sonic than Sonic has been in 15 years.

Take the Sonic Generations engine and combine Classic and Modern Sonic's gameplay. Basically this:

Classic Sonic in 3D but with a homing attack, and throw in the Sonic Adventure styled exploitable spin dash for good measure. From there, all you need to do is throw in the staples from the old Sonic games: at least 9-10 zones with 2-3 acts a piece, playable Tails (and Knuckles?) with different routes, Special Stages like the ones in Sonic 2 and the bosses/minibosses like Sonic 3. Get Richard Jacques, the British guy responsible for the Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn) music and Sonic R to do the music.

If they wanted to go overboard, time-trial ghosts would be awesome, alongside a 2P race a la Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (with online?) and heck even a Chao Garden.

This would literally be the perfect Sonic game. SEGA has all of the components, they just keep missing the mark. It's baffling, honestly

Well yeah, exactly. They don't need to start from scratch - just refine what they've already got. The best bits of Classic and Modern Sonic in Generations would be a better game. And no, I don't want a classic skin, it's not nostalgia goggles - it could be a Modern Sonic model for all I care. Classic Sonic, in both 2D and 3D, has fundamentally different acceleration and behaviour, especially on slopes. Plus the boost mechanic sucks dong

That's a goddamn 2D game you pleb. In 3D it's naturally harder to be accurate with your jumps, especially when you're moving at the kinds of speeds they present in newer Sonic games. They make the enemies absolutely giant compared to Sonic in games like Generations, but without the homing attack it still craps up the pace of the game to bounce around off of enemies heads in 3D. As I say, it could do with far less range than it currently has (between half and two thirds of its current version, I'd say) but it still serves a purpose. Homing attack in 2D is the devils work though, but if it's a 2D/3D hybrid game I don't see a comfortable way around that

Why? So it could be even more casual? Sonic's about physics, you attack with momentum, not Angry Birds QTEs. Mario doesn't need a shitty do-it-for-me-daddy homing attack in his 3D games.

This is a perfectly valid point unless you're a casual. People complained when Mega Man Legends gave you a lock-on. Monster Hunter is one of the most successful franchises ever and has no targeting system at all.

And no, not all the monsters are fucking huge, but I don't expect casuals to know that, having not played it.

Make it like Sonic CD, but give us a few characters to pick from with different gameplay styles. Get rid of the "ow the edge" shit and just go back to the classic roots.

Just give it a different name altogether, Sonic <insert edgy word here>, or Sonic Throwback, Sonic Classic, something like that. Sonic 5 gives the impression it's following on from the atrocity that is Sonic 4

That being said, I agree 100% about Taxman and Stealth making the next game. Personally I'd have them on the engine/gameplay, the graphics hand-drawn resembling Sonic CD/Sonic the Movie, and music by Richard Jacques

Well a lot of fangames seem to come up with relatively 'fresh' seeming ideas by taking two zone tropes and throwing them into a blender. Like, for example, a Green Hill type grassy level combined with a city stage, making a sort of urban park level. Or an Eggman base installed within an ancient water temple; an icy mountain with lava sections, and so on. Of course, they've already done a, spring yard, then a casino, then a carnival, so I'd say the next level in that trope would be the inside of a bright neon 90s arcade.

With all that being said, the rehashing in Sonic 4 wasn't necessarily the problem - rather, it was a symptom of the real problem, being that SEGA were trying to superficially recreate the aesthetic and tropes of the old games whilst knowing precisely jack shit about what made them work mechanically
