Who do you want in the next Mario Kart? Besides the koopalings, 8 really dropped the ball where the racers are concerned. Missing crucial veterans, and no other good newcomers.
Personally I'd like the Mario Party partners to get in. They're members of popular and beloved races, but they're polished individuals too. Having them would be better than having a generic member of each of their race, anyway.

Mario veterans: Birdo, Diddy Kong, Bowser Jr., Petey Piranha and/or King Boo, Dry Bones
Non-Mario characters: Kirby, Ness (I can dream)

I remember having some autistic moment where I wrote a huge list of characters that belong in Mario Kart. It was mostly in response to that article Kotaku wrote about how Mario Kart lacks diversity, so I just generated this huge list.
Beside bringing back the vets, even DK Jr. and Petey I included a lot of Wario, Mario RPG, Paper Mario, and Mario and Luigi characters. Those are probably the most ripe for the picking. DKC characters were good too. Some highlights:

As much as I hate the babies and the metals, I believe Mario Kart wouldn't benefit from having a huge autistic crossover roster that tries to cram in as much irrelevant RPG characters as possible.
