Half the sum.

Twice as old.

>>
>>320171327

>>320176205

Just replace every "when" with "="

a-princess present age
b-prince present age
c-years in the future
d-years in the past

>A princess is as old as the prince will be
a=b+c

>when the princess is twice as old as the prince was
a+c=2(b-d)

>when the princess age was half of the sum of their present age
a-d=1/2(a+b)

a-b-c=0
a+c-2b+2d=0
a-d-1/2a-1/2b=0

We are looking for a relation between a and b, so we need to get rid of c and d

a-b-c=0
a+c-2b+2d=0
(+)-----------------
2a-3b+2d=0

2a-3b+2d=0
a-d-1/2a-1/2b=0 |*2

2a-3b+2d=0
2a-2d-a-b=0
(+)---------------
3a-4b=0

3a=4b

The prince is 3/4 the age of the princess.

30 40 then.

Back to school.
>>
I finally fucking did it, I know how to actually solve this riddle now.
Game tricks you by giving you a huge fucking riddle, just break it down. Focus on the last part.
"princess' age was half the sum of their present age"
Only two answers work for this to be true, 1 and 3. 20+30=50/2=25. 30+40=70/2=35.
2 and 4 give the same answers, but you have to take in consideration the princess' age in the past. It can't be more than her current age as that doesn't make sense. So for 4, she couldn't have been 25 in the past when she's 20 in the present and she couldn't have been 35 in the past for 3 when she's currently 30.

So you're left with 1 and 2. So she was 5 years younger when her age was half the sum of their present age. Subtract 5 from the prince's age in both 1 and 3. You get 15 for 1 and 25 for 3.

Multiply those numbers by 2 and you get 30 for 1 and 50 for 3.
1 doesn't work out because the princess is that age in the present in the answer, but the question is referring to how old she WILL be. So the only plausible answer is 3. 10 years will have passed, the Prince will be 40, the Princess will be 50 and since the Princess is as old as the Prince WILL be, she's presently 40.

That made me a lil autistically happy.

Thanks, but why didn't you combine 2a and -a in your explanation while removing d from the problem? Haven't taken math in awhile and I was never too great at it, so might be a dumb question.
>>
>>320181317
It's 3.

It seems hard because you can't get the answer without actually looking at them- there are 4 unknows and only 3 relations between them, so all you can do is find a relation between the princess and prince age, not the exact answer.

>>320181594
>but why didn't you combine 2a and -a in your explanation while removing d from the problem?
Because I'm lazy, I skipped that and went right to 3a-4b=0.

The point of giving you a full party early on is that you're already used to having a full party because you have beaten BG1.

But you just jumped straight to BG2 didn't you?

Honestly, the companions was how retarded interaction with them was. Wait a long ass time in real fucking time for Janiera to act like a cunt, Viconia to act like an edgelord, or Aerie to whine some more before you engage in a romance with them.
Aerie was completely butchered after her 4th or 5th piece of dialogue which sucked. She was just a elf with a somewhat interesting backstory that went through some traumatic shit, but then came the fucking WATERFALLS.

You borrow 50 from one friend and 50 from another to purchase it.

maybe
many people recommend skipping BG1 because old editions of D&D combat at low level at pretty fucking harsh and your going to have many moments of waiting for dice rolls to land your way.

the advantage of BG2 is that it puts you at around level 8 at the start of the game so you have tools to play with right from the start.

if you here for the story which is the main draw of BG then you should play the first and probably play a Fighter or Paladin, mages have little to do in BG1 besides using the sleep spell to shit on everything, all the really fun magic comes with BG2.

You're supposed to come up with a word or phrase, but the way you get there is pretty convoluted.

The inclusion of two duplicate files, plus the reference to animals “reproduced below”, is meant to lead solvers to the realization that all of the animal types depicted have been successfully cloned. The line “when introduced” should be applied to both the cloned animals and the cartoon characters. The difference between the year of each animal’s first cloning and its jersey number gives a number in the 1–26 alphanumeric range; these letters are then ordered by introduction of cartoon character.

The letters spelled out, “MUDDY IS WHAT?”, can in the context of a cartoon character-based puzzle be answered with MUDSKIPPER, the final solution word.

The answer is the one the math-tards are saying sadly.

Math would dictate that they are the same age.

However, logic (aka the shitty wording) dictates that they must be a different age.

You must find a way to solve an equations that lets them be different ages while still answering the question.

The alternative is hitting Genie with a large stick, this too is a perfectly viable answer.

Statistics are not practical. They can only be used to solve the impractical.

You're fishing for answers you could find yourself.

You maybe good at math, but you're a shit, immoral fuck with a compass that only points in the direction they see fit.

Yes, but it's also unreliable. 'm not saying it's wrong.
>>320188256
>You then jerry-rigged the question into an equations to be solved.
It's not relevant though.

The exact numbers don't matter, all that matters is the relation.

It could be 60 80 or 90 120 as well.

>>320188749
>but you're a shit, immoral fuck with a compass that only points in the direction they see fit.

It's really just a skill that you train. They have a list of methods of going about solving puzzles, and the most important is organizing the data in different ways to see where the patterns pop up. Of course you have to be smart but a lot of it involves just working at it.

What I usually find, when looking at Mystery Hunt puzzles, is that there are psychotically huge leaps of logic required.

This can be mitigated by working in teams, which most people do.

I find I just bounce off these puzzles more often than not.

>But it's not this planet, in that world it's a fantasy setting with gods and shit.
Riddles in fantasy games can't really work like this though, since you don't have a lifetime of experience in that world, like you caracter does. Riddles in these situations are acceptable to be more Earth-based, in my opinion. For example, to us, a riddle like this would be unsolvable:

>Glorthinax' bane is what defines me, water is what hides me. What am I?

It's impossible for us, but our characters would know that 200 years ago, Glorthinax was defeated only because the Fae folk joined the Alrothian Aloliance, and Faerie magic is nullified by water. The answer is Faerie Magic.

Shit example, but you understand my point.
>>

>algebrafags still at it
This thread still going? Cool, I can finally post the real answer.

>Basically options are inter-related and their past ages are also a part of the options. We just have to relate one option (current age) with another (older age) that validates,
>(a) Princess is older than Prince
>(b) But, Princess age should be twice in the Past of any age Prince was.

>So, possible answers are 1 and 3

>But, option 1 can't be the answer simple because Princess is twice as old as the Prince WAS , which option 3 makes up in relation to option 1.

The answers are integrated into the puzzle. The answers are not false premise.

The question is "Which of the following, then, could be true?". "Could". Not "is". You cannot answer "is" because neither the question nor game allows you to answer it that way.
>>
>>320195668
So what's the answer then, genius?
>>
>>320198203
Obviously it's ghosts.

They follow and lead but only as you pass (on into the next life)
Dress yourself in the darkest black and they are darker still (ghosts are made out of the pure blackness of the afterlife and that's why you can't see them)
>Always they flee the light
Ever seen a ghost in the middle of the day?
>Without the sun there would be none
Obviously humans need the sun, and without humans there would be no ghosts.

>>

>without the sun, there would be none
Shadows would still exist without the sun, human beings just wouldn't be around to see them.
>If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
The answer is of course yes. The tree would still make a sound, and the shadows would still exist. Reality is outside of human experience, and we can therefor conclude that "Shadows" is unmistakably and objectively the incorrect answer.
>>
>>320202169
Yes it does bitch, deal with it.
>>
>>320171327
No number is given in the riddle, so the only answer is the one without a number. Same age. Easy.

>>
>>320202207
And without the sun ghosts wouldn't exist either? What about muh alien ghosts?
Face, it you are way overthinking what is really just a heaping of purple prose.
>>
>>320202352
No, it doesn't, there is no fucking lighting in the world that will make shadows lighter than something lit, because the entire point of shadows is that they are the absence of fucking light.

You complete literal retard.
>>
>>320202607
I can't believe I have to share a board with retards like you
>>
>>320201893

You are fucking retarded. How dark a shadow is doesn't depend on lighting at all. Shadows exist precisely because of the absence of light. The photons cannot traverse through a certain material, hence why they do not cast "light" upon a surface. Your "shadow" is nothing but a shape drawn by light around your figure.

You are a fucking retard
>>
>>320171327
That riddle is very poorly worded.
>>
>>320202752
>the entire point of shadows is that they are the absence of fucking light
Not entirely. A shadow is what is cast by something obstructing light, and some shadows are lighter than others. You are using the definition of darkness, and not shadows. Not even that, you are using the definition of absolute and complete darkness. You are pretty stupid.
>>
>>320203038
And the lighting dictates how dark that shadow is, dumbshit. How do you not understand this?

You just have to figure it our from the choices given =

a princess is as old as the prince will be (a)
when the princess is twice as old (b)
as the prince was (c)
when the princess' age was half (d)
the sum of their present age (e)

1) the prince is 20 and the princess is 30 -> (e) = 50, (d) = 25 (c) = 15 (b) = 30 (a) = 20 //princess is not 20 false
2) the prince is 40 and the princess is 30 -> (e) = 70, (d) = 35 (c) = 45 (b) = 90 (a) = 100 //princess is not 100 false
3) the prince is 30 and the princess is 40 -> (e) = 70, (d) = 35 (c) = 25 (b) = 50 (a) = 40 //princess is 40 true
4) the prince is 30 and the princess is 20 -> (e) = 50, (d) = 25 (c) = 35 (b) = 70 (a) = 80 //princess is not 80 false
>>
>>320203336
>>320203467
My original statement was about shadows on black material being darker than the black material being lit, not about the ambient lighting changing the shade of the shadows.

Don't change the fucking subject.
>>
>>320203038
>The photons cannot traverse through a certain material, hence why they do not cast "light" upon a surface
Except mostly not every single photon is blocked. Some light still gets through, which is why we get shadows that are completely black and some which are more gradient.
