They were probably triming to mirror the marketing stratagy of the original NES system as it was redesigned for selling in the west. The Japenese NES was thought to not be bulky and hardy enough to appeal to weasterners so it was resigned. They might have though making larger controllers would appeal in the same manor but there is a huge difference between a large console that you never pick up and a fucking mammoth controller you have to hold while playing.
Just an idea. Could also be the the fucks at microsoft couldn't figure out how to fit rumblers inside a controller at first and had to make it huge as a result.

After the dreamcast was cancelled Microsoft picked up the team responsible for creating the dreamcast and had them finish the OG Xbox that was nearly done. Then they went on to make the 360. That is why the 360 (in its original release incarnation) is sometimes considered the spiritual successor to the dreamcast.

Do you actually believe that? N64 analog sticks are probably some of the cheapest pieces of hardware Nintendo ever produced. I've experienced more broken ones in my time than working, never seen a broken Playstation analog stick though.
Also my point was they got the placement right, so even if what I just pointed out weren't the case, it would still be light years better just because of the fact alone that they got controller layout right, unlike Nintendo.
