I had Vaan as a monk, Ashe as a samurai, Penelo as a white mage, Basch as a knight, Fran as a red mage, and Balthier as a machinist. Machinist isn't all that useful, but if you give him exodus and famfrit, along with wyrm fire shot, you can cast oil on some tankier enemies and tear them a new asshole.

You can always increase battle speed. Keep in mind fast forward function is exactly, that, fast forward. It's meant for crossing big areas and not really combat. And do rotate your characters.

I usually give the characters you listed different jobs, but if you want suggestions for the others:
I tend to give Ashe jobs with lots of offensive abilites, like Black Mage or Uhlan. It fits her attitude, I think.
Balthier usually gets versatile jobs, like Machinist or Red Mage.
I don't really use Vaan so I give him jobs with super situational shit.

Most ppl I know played with 3 base characters, which is perfectly fine, no one forcing you to play the others. Just have them at least a little leveled 10/20 behind your characters so they can quickly get in, revive your good guys, and die.

Even then, you need to constantly step in when something throws a wrench into your plans.

It was so bad in Xenoblade, maybe because the game is so similar to FFXII, at least superficially. At least one character is practically unusuable unless player-controlled because their AI is fundamentally garbage, and everyone else has such bad AI scripts that working around them is actually the most challenging part of any battle. You should never be wrestling with your companions more than you should with the actual enemies you're fighting.

Vayne had no reason to do anything any more once the Sun Cryst was destroyed by Reddas. The reigns of history were finally back in the hands of man and the Occuria/Gerun had nothing to ever barter power with again. The Sun Cryst was the largest deposit of Nethicite they would ever manipulate with and it was the original host of all the game's shards.
Venat even mentions this to Vayne after his second defeat on the Bahamut.
Vayne simply needed to die because he thought it was smart to start manufacturing mock Nethicite.
