I usually spend 3 or 4 hours in it trying to tweak my character to look like the cutest girl I can make and then as soon as I hit start I spin the camera and realize that she looks really ugly from a certain angle and have to start over again. It's frustrating but I like to consider myself an expert craftsmen at creating cute girls in whatever editor I can.

This. More character editors need to just give you a completely free camera with different lighting options. Additionally it would be cool to have a "test" button that throws you into a little example world where you can see how you actually look in-game with the usual camera angle and animations.

I make an idealized version of myself.
After playing for a little bit and get a good idea of how the game works and how i like to play best ill often restart but ill make a new character thats the opposite of my first character.
After some more time playing ill likely find a diiferent play method i enjoy and restart the game. I may do this a few more times until i figure out my ideal play style, i'll also end up going back to the idealized version of me.

It makes the most sense, most, off not all fo the decisions I make on first playthroughs are influenced solely by myself. I rarely, if at all, use guides, or will look things up. It just makes sense to me.

I always make a brown musclegirl with blue eyes before anything else. Usually I don't make anything else at all.
For male characters I just pick whatever face goes best with the biggest bushiest beard and/or mustache available.
For female characters I randomize the face until I find something passable and move on.
My eyes glaze over when I see a million face sliders.

Characters like link are fine, they have an established history.
Characters like the fallout guy are not. They're literally just "A guy" or "A girl" forced into the role of this narritive. They don't have any backstory, they don't have any emotion, they're robots. You choose their emotion, and the emotions you choose, don't always convey.
Can I have an overly optomistic girl? Does she cheer and jump, and actually have energy? No. She just nods at everything. apparently thats being optomisitc.
Can I have a brooding edgelord samurai? No, because the worst options to choose are simply "No" and "I don't like it".
Theres no freedom, whats the point of a character creator if the character I choose to make is limited to the confines of the game narritive?
