Why do devs often fuck up when they make this statement? Is it due to a lack of understanding of what made the originals great, or is it something else?

I don't think it felt like the original at all. Back in my day if you got in a fight with more than one enemy at a time you just instantly died has half the classes in the game, so you needed to party with other people and help each other. In this one I could fight 15-30 weak enemies just mashing my face on the keyboard without any trouble.
