John Romero just shared a video of the PC version of Mario 3. iD software made it in 1990 and presented it to Nintendo (who rejected it). They went on to make Commander Keen instead.
>>
>>320151906
Looks like shite.
>>
Why did computers from that era have such shit colors? Also, it's too floaty and Mario is too fat.

>Why did computers from that era have such shit colors?

It was made to work on IBM clones and out of the box those had very weak graphics since the IBM PC was made as a purely work computer.

This is also a demo made in record time to show that a port to the PC could be done at all. On hardware that could only do scrolling up to then by redrawing every single thing resulting in very choppy scrolling, this was a marvel of programming.
>>
That's cool
>>
Better than the MegaMan port.
>>
There is something very Game Gear-esque about this.
>>
>>320152712
>>320152521

This was coded in a night, by just watching SMB3 and copying it. If they had access to the actual game's source code, they could have made an actual port instead of a copy.
>>
>>320151906
>creates a copy of a game even without source code in one night.
>On hardware that didn't even have good gaming performance.

iD made engine wonders.
They don't often make good games, but their engines are godsent.
Just look at how versatile id Tech3 is.
>>
>>320152712
They weren't made for gaming. Plain and simple.

The IBM PC was made for spreadsheets. Amazing how they evolved and we're using them right now.

Considering what happened to id I would say Nintendo was smart to not let them do a port.

Back then, the only real sound capabilities on a computer were a simple square wave speaker.

If you were Mr. Megabux, you could spend $150-200 on an Adlib Music Synthesizer and get simple 8 bit sound.

Also, the graphics were shit because they made it EGA compatible. They could have gone with VGA support (IBM PS/2), but at that time, most people didn't have it. VGA didn't become affordable until 1992 or 1993. Early VGA cards were running $350+.
After 1992, you could grab an Oak Technologies VGA for $50-80

>This was coded in a night
That's not how I remember that story. AFAIK Carmack spent a long time trying to make this work, maybe they actually made the Mario assets and levels in a night, but definitely not the technology behind it.

I'm not even sure where I read this, but the big problem with doing this is at the time, was that PCs didn't have enough processing power to scroll every pixel on the screen, so carmack had to figure out a way to calculate which same-colored pixels would change in-between frames and only update those so it would become as efficient as possible and actually be able to do sidescrolling.
Looking at it this now it probably doesn't look very impressive, it's just mario what's the big deal, but it actually is fucking wizardy.
Ah the times where consoles actually were more powerful than PCs (well not really, but they had specialized hardware for game-specific functions).
>>
>>320159546
Part of the reason it was done had to with the fact that they were working as programmers and they wanted out of that company.

Eventually the company just let them make games but they could have gotten in big trouble for what they did. It's pretty funny though because the guy that ran the company was willing to give them money as a start up but then the entire company planned on walking out if they did. So they had to come to some agreement.

When you think about it now he should have let all those people walk. Id was making boat loads.

It had great level design and a cool gimmick. Great music. Was reasonably difficult.

yes and eventually the PS comes around and allows CDs.

There was this story of a guy in development who invented an early type of digital camera. In the end it was buried because not only were the existing cameras better, but the company had photo development booths and they sold film for their cameras. Meaning that they would lose out massively.

Years later they were replaced by other digital cameras from other companies and they went bankrupt because they couldnt catch up with the new tech.

The same you could see on the GC. their stupid minidisks added extra patent costs and in some games parts had to be compressed or cut to allow the smaller space.
