They were pretty easy even solo if you had upgraded your weapon a little bit, you just had to be really aggressive so you didn't get double teamed. And if you brought Solaire it was almost impossible to lose.

Not to mention they were just the Maneaters from Demon's Souls with slightly more varied movesets, so anyone who played that first would just kind of shrug them off. And I think Maneaters were more memorable even as someone who thinks DaS is better than DeS across the board, because they were actually one of the harder bosses in DeS and were fought in a dark, precarious arena where half the time all you could see was their eyes, and they came at the end of one of the most creepy, disgusting, and difficult levels in the game.

The most "iconic" moment in Dark Souls is Biggie Smalls. Easy.

Tomb of the Giants was also somehow even worse. Those fucking giant dog skeletons, Jesus Christ.

Gargoyles were still easy even on 1.0 though. I beat them on launch day with maybe two deaths and no Solaire. All you needed to do was throw a couple upgrades on your starting weapon and they would go down easy enough.

Maneaters were not that hard in the grand scheme of things, especially once you figure out to just bait them around the torch in the center of the arena, which anyone semi-experienced with Souls will get immediately. However by Demon's Souls standards they were one of the harder bosses. They would catch you off guard if it was your first Souls game because it's one of the only times in DeS where you ever potentially have to fight two strong enemies at once, and it's easy to fall off the arena if you leave the center torch area.

Compared to a lot of other Souls bosses they're not hard, but they're in a game full of really, really easy bosses. Only Flamelurker, Penetrator (without Biorr), and maybe False King Allant are more challenging.

Nah it was my first souls games and I still didnt feel like they were more than a generic fight really, maybe I just killed the first one way too fast but the second didn't even come in play before the first was down

Also I should have mentioned that after dragon god I actually went back to boletaria and did 1-3 first, so that helped me out even more, those 2 black phantom minister encounters were harder than maneater for me and I actually had to use thiefs ring to seperate them

Yeah flamelurker/biorless penetrator/king allant are the only challenging bosses in this game, and old king doran is still harder than all of them, or just tedious to roll and uppercut him the entire fight

They buffed the souls you got by 33% (roughly) and reduced enemy health by 33%.
They also increased the amount of damage you did. All of this combined made the Capra Demon a fucking nightmare in the 1.0.
PC players actually never experienced the 1.0 since they got the game in the Prepare to Die Edition patch, which came out around a year after the 1.0 and had the substantial changes already integrated (more souls from kills, more damage to enemies, etc...).
I wish they would have created a hard mode that was the 1.0.

Channelers are Cancer, so yeah. They force you to man up and "DEEEAAL WITH ME UNDEEAD WEEE HEEE EEE WHAT ARE YOU A SCRUUUUB?"

I think their presence is good. They are an obstacle that while hard, CAN be dealt with and it's better to do it than not in the long run. They are initially intimidating but teach you to stop being a little bitch and deal with problems in the game, and generally make for good "sub boss" material.

I hope DSIII has more like them. Necromancers are a good, similar thing, but having a buffer/"I spam the Soul Arrows, BITCH" enemy like them is good.

Having one interact with a boss fight is also neat, too.

When you realize that they are literally associated so closely with Seath, along with realizing those fucking golems and the Boars and the Snakemen are also his fault, it makes you fucking hate him. It puts him into context as a major source of grief for you from a very early point in the game.

He's been fucking with you since the Undead Parish.

Summoning does generally make things easier, but in some cases it can make it harder. Summoning Solaire against the Gaping Dragon is usually a bad idea since he's too dumb to move or use his lightning spears, so he dies three seconds in and you're left with a buffed boss and no help.

Maneaters were the Hitlers of NG+. They get so much harder on subsequent NG+ runs because their health increases too much for the common "kill one before the other one causes trouble" tactic to work.
