It's honestly an empty shell with a few things to do. So far the quests consist of nothing but fetch quests and a few bosses. The only half decent thing about Starbound is the building on account of them at least having quite a few themes and decorations, everything else is pretty lackluster or downright shitty though.
I think the biggest shame is that it really could have been a decent game, but it was so monumentally mismanaged. I remember their roadmap listing so many features as 90% complete that were in reality very barebones and then they ended up attempting to redo it because what they did rush out was awful. They lacked direction, focus, they'd try to finish one part of the game seemingly without taking into account how it would effect other parts and are constantly trying to catch up and balance everything.
How many combat revamps have there been? Are they going to redo ore/gear progression again? Quests were supposedly 80% done a year or two ago, why are they only recently implemented and so basic? Have they even finished adding in their original Kickstarter stretch goals?
Thing is they could fix all this, but it seems like they just work on random shit or whatever they feel like, if someone could kick their asses into gear and organize them they might actually have put out a decent game instead of being shit all over for constantly fucking up and dicking around.

Terraria's grinding does not even come close to comparing to Starbound's grinding. Terraria doesn't really repeat itself, while Starbound repeats itself ten times.
I do wish Starbound was good, but as it is, it's just wasted potential, which is not really surprising since Chucklefish is really just a bunch of artists and idea guys. It's possible that mods improve it significantly, but isn't Starbound's mod community almost dead?

Most of the fun stuff comes in hard mode (killing WoF), so I'd say be prepared for it.
The weakest hard mode only enemy is way stronger than anything you faced before. Corruption is a non-issue if you make some preparations.

CW is currently sort of a barebones tech demo of what wollay wanted to do. All you can really do is farm dungeons and look for types of bait to get rarer mounts. It's fun for a while, but it's lacking, which is why he's currently adding stuff in.
