If they're releasing the game in multiple episodes, then that only means they're expanding the game significantly and each episode will be a full length game. Either that, or cheaper smaller games. Not small games at full price.

I can promise if taken into account the gamer population during its release its probably the best selling of the series. It damn sure is the one other FF games like to reference in hopes of playing to the audience like in 10. And hype fucking exploded for PS3 when people thought it might happen then thanks to that cock tease demo. And its name has sold plenty of side games and a couple of movies. HD remakes have done pretty well in the market too as far as I can tell.
I hope its true and its because the game will be amazing, but if side content and exploring is gone people are going to pull out the pitchforks and torches because 7 was the last game where those things felt nice to do. (well maybe 8 a little, but everything afters meager side content blew ass)

The real reason has to be cost. To recreate all the elements of the original game with modern production values, including fully explorable areas rather than pre-rendered backgrounds is just far too expensive.
They obviously need to recoup costs during development.
So I guess you could say it's "too big" from a purely financial point of view.

Well yes. The fact that they reference the game as often as possible, people shit themselves for a tech demo, and its the game that started spinoffs for Square and movies. So yea I would say its the most popular of the series. It was also a greatest hits which required sales records. It sold something around 10 million in a time frame where selling a 150k copies was actually good (the requirement to be a greatest hit on PS1)
For comparison XIII sold less than 7 million in a time where AAA selling in the millions is a lot more common. Can't speak for the other poster though. The beloved X, or as I like to call it killer of exploration, sold around 8 even riding the hype of the PS2.
