The game can't decide if it's a direct sequel to Trigger or its own spiritual successor and ends up creating a poorly paced convoluted mess of a story that's explained mostly through text dumps in its misguided attempt to do both. If it focused purely on the events of Chronopolis and Schala or the relationship between Lynx, Serge and Kid it could have worked but the end result was a disc 2 that feels like it's only half finished and a finale that feels totally unrelated to the events that led up to it.
Also its gameplay systems work against each other. The way the magic system works and its huge cast of 40 party members creates a problem where only like five characters in the whole game are worth using since the only thing separating them is their base stats, limited even further by only allowing three characters in the party at any given time. Its ideas would have worked better in something like an SRPG where you have to work with a whole team of characters in every battle. Maybe they could have avoided it by making the combat harder and forcing the player to use different strategies throughout the game but the depth of the games mechanics is wasted on battles that rarely provide a challenge.
Not that Chrono Trigger was a difficult game with a deep battle system or anything, but the way its tech system worked, the way all its party members were worthwhile in combat and the fast pace of battles gave you more incentive to play around.
Cross looks pretty and has a great soundtrack though. I'll definitely give it credit for its presentation.
